Rams could affect Chiefs' draft strategy

The St. Louis Rams hold the key to the Chiefs' first-round pick in the 2008 NFL draft. If the Rams, who have the second pick, believe veteran left tackle Orlando Pace is on his last legs, and right tackle Alex Barron, a 2005 first-round pick, will continue to struggle, then they'll take Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long, the object of the Chiefs' affections.

If I'm not mistaken, this guy never allowed a sack last year. He will be a stud in the NFL.

April 6, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Actually, he got schooled by Vernon Gholston in the last regualr season game, but other than that one game, he was a stud. He's no where near as good as last year's #1 OT taken (Joe Thomas), but he may be a decent replacement for Orlando Pace.

I'm surprised the chiefs expected him to fall down to #5 in the first place

Jake Long is the obvious pick after Chris Long goes number one. The Chiefs should draft Ryan Clady. He's the best run blocker in the draft by far.

April 6, 2008  01:21 PM ET

there is a great chance he goes number 1 overall to the Dolphins because that O-line is terrible... the only way he falls to the Chiefs is if Chris Long goes to the Dolphins and the Rams take Gholston to help their terrible pass rush

April 6, 2008  01:34 PM ET

It's amazing how pathetic so many teams are. The top 5 teams in the draft are just absolutely horrible, and ALL of them could use Jake Long's. Unfortunately there is only one. Ryan Clady could help another team in the top 5 out, but I don't think that a team that high will pull the trigger for Clady. If Ogah or Clady are left in the late part of the 1st round, one of those teams should think about trading up to get them. It's a sad situation for them. But if you don't have a good O-Line NOTHING is gonna work. A good O-Line enhances the play of the entire offense.

Theres still great offensive linemen in the later parts of the 1st round, if none of these teams cant get this guy, then they can trade down in the first or trade up from the 2nd round since they got early picks there.
Jake Long is good, but he's no Joe Thomas. These first picks gotta chose the best player available!, no matter what need is!!

April 6, 2008  02:48 PM ET

Whoever gets Long is getting a Hall Of Fame player, he only allowed one sack in college, but I believe early in his career he will be getting thrown around. He is going to be good for many years to come!

davidray: Long was the 2006 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year - beating out Joe Thomas and Levi Brown. Thomas had a great rookie year and is the real deal, but to imply that Long is not at the same level is a little harsh. At the very least he has the same potential.

April 6, 2008  03:39 PM ET

Be serious people. Jake Long is every bit as good as Joe Thomas. He allowed one sack all year, with that sack being credited to a high first-round draft choice. No shame in that. Seoul says that Long got "schooled" the entire OSU game, when in reality he got "schooled" on one play. As posted above, Long beat out Thomas and Brown, as a Junior, for the Offensiive Lineman of the Year award in 2007. I trust those voters opinions more than those of us typing on this silly thread.

April 6, 2008  03:48 PM ET

"Offensiive Lineman of the Year award in 2007"....and Troy Smith got the Heisman Award....what's your point? College awards mean nothing in the NFL. I'm not saying he won't be a starter in the NFL, I just don't think he's a "Joe Thomas". We will see in September.

April 6, 2008  05:17 PM ET

Even if by chance the Fins and Rams skip him I dont see him going past the Raiders anyway if they keep their pick and not trade out.

April 6, 2008  05:25 PM ET

subzero,

That would be the best pick for the Raiders. But I wonder if they would be afraid to draft another O-lineman due to how Robert Gallery turned out.

April 6, 2008  07:02 PM ET

nuts....

April 6, 2008  07:44 PM ET

Seoul, My point is at this time you can only compare their college careers, seeing as Long has yet to play a pro game. During this very recent time period (college careers) Long was considered by many to be a better player, hence the award. Unless Long has suddenly regressed, which he hasn't, I don't know how you can say that Long is "no where near as good" as Thomas. You are the first person I have heard that has called Long " maybe a decent replacement" player.. Most have him anchoring the left side of somebodys line for 12-15 years. As you alluded to, time will tell. Might you be a Buckeye fan?

April 6, 2008  09:28 PM ET

Jake Long is everybit as good as Joe Thomas and Levi Brown
and u say collage awards dont matter
Lets take a look at the last 10 heisman winners
Tim Tebow(collage), Troy Smith(meh), Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Jason White, Carson Palmer, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke, Ron Dayne, Ricky Williams
ok i see 3 great players in that list 4 if u include Tebow
but the heisman is never realy the stud
but most of the past O Lineman of the year have been succesful in the Draft

April 6, 2008  09:35 PM ET

uuuuhhhhhhh. this sucks...can anything ever go right for the chiefs....it's o.k. - i still love you guys

April 6, 2008  09:43 PM ET

Sure the Chiefs have their sights sets on Long but, what about Sedrick Ellis?

April 6, 2008  11:57 PM ET

People thought he was the best offensive line draft prospect LAST YEAR, ahead of Thomas and Brown, so how can you already wirte him off? He didn't have a holding penalty last year and he gave up one sack to Gholston (who he actually played well against the rest of the game), who is supposed to be a top 5-10 pick.

How Funny Would it be if he went first overall to the dolphins and went down in NFL history as the biggest bust. but i highly doubt that either way, its obvious the rams will take him they had a mishap season last year and will deff. rebound to a playoff team and renew the "best show on turf",Steven Jackson,Bulger and Holt wont let us down
