Chamberlain heater tops 100 mph

The first pitch , a 77-mph curve, caught Tampa's Willy Aybar off guard. But it was the second, a 101-mph heater, that had Aybar believing he had no chance. And when Joba Chamberlain finished him off with an 85-mph slider, it hardly seemed fair as Aybar was gone on three pitches. After the win stopped the Yanks' two-game slide, all the talk was about Chamberlain topping 100 mph yesterday. Chamberlain had to be informed of his own feat.

YES had 97mph...where is 101 coming from?

April 7, 2008  06:38 AM ET

Yankees won't even make it to the post season.......so it doesn't matter.

April 7, 2008  07:10 AM ET

Yea Broadhead your right. Joba go back to just pitching in the 90's. In fact quit the Yankees and get a normal job, broadhead has said it doesnt matter.

April 7, 2008  07:11 AM ET

it was freezing yesterday there. Surprised he could throw that hard and fast.

April 7, 2008  07:13 AM ET

In all honesty, I've seen the radar gun at the Stadium put up some pretty wacky numbers.

But what's the difference? If the gun on the fastball was off, maybe the hook was only 72. A 30-mph difference between those two pitches will buckle anyone's knees.

Man, the hype and lovefest for this guy is ridiculous. But if he can keep that up we'll see.

April 7, 2008  08:14 AM ET

Who cares, this has been done a milion times before...Not news.

April 7, 2008  08:45 AM ET

The news on Joba was coming in to 1st and 3rd with no outs and getting out of it and then pitching the eight as well while only throwing 16 pitches total.

You realize he's only pitched about 40 or so innings, I don't think he's proven that he can keep it up. I also think that the Yanks shouldd give up on him as a starter (lot more stress on that amazing arm) and groom him to be Rivera's heir to the closing throne.

I completely agree with you about keeping him in the Pen. Yes he has only pitched 40 Innings but if he was in a closing situation he would have 39 saves, that would'nt be to bad for a rookie would it?

April 7, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Seriously Joba needs to become a permanent fixture in the pen. Because if you make him a starter he will give you 6-7 great innings only to have it blown in the 7th or 8th by Hawkins or Farnsworth. So at best Joba can only help you once every 5 days and that is if the Yankee relief corp (sans Mo because he is the only one I have faith in) doesn't blow it. As a set up man he can help the Yankees 3 or 4 times every 5 games by making sure a Yankee lead holds up and makes it to Mo in the 9th. And who cares if it was 97 or 101 mph because when there is 30 mph differece between your curve and your fastball and you can locate your pitches you are going to be something special.

*not 30 mph... that was meant to be 20 mph... my mistake its early still

NomarFan... What? They should "give up" on him as a starter? I wasn't aware they had made any ATTEMPT to start him.

April 7, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Is this really news? I thought his ability to hit 100mph was common knowledge.

Do you not remember all the talk this entire off-season. The Yanks just made up their minds before the start of the season to keep him in the pen.

April 7, 2008  09:51 AM ET

He started most of the spring and only went to the 'pen toward the end. According to the Yankees, their long-term plan is for him to start. I personally think his future is as the closer.
