Giants in market for first baseman

Giants general manager Brian Sabean acknowledged on his weekly radio show that he is looking for a first baseman, preferably a left-handed hitter. The Giants have had internal discussions about Washington's Nick Johnson, but he might be off the market after winning the everyday first-base job and starting the season strongly. A source said the Giants scouted 26-year-old Braves first baseman Scott Thorman, who hit 11 home runs in 287 at-bats last season. In spring training, the A's tried in vain to get the Giants to bite on Dan Johnson.

Didn't this story get run yesterday? Really, once wasn't enough?

April 7, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Wow, Giants need a first baseman...A's trying to move Johnson. "Mr Sabean, Mr. Beane on line one."

April 7, 2008  09:23 AM ET

The Braves would be stupid to move Thorman with the uncertainty of where Texeria will be playing next season

April 7, 2008  09:34 AM ET

It's like deja vu all over again.

April 7, 2008  10:42 AM ET

aren't the Giants in the market for like every other position player as well>?

April 7, 2008  10:50 AM ET

The Giants are screwed w/ or w/o some first baseman. When your best hitter is Omar Vizquel and he isnt even in the lineup right now, last place has your name on it.

April 7, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Lookin for a first baseman, and 2nd, and third, and CF, and ohhhhhh

hell with it

April 7, 2008  11:38 AM ET

By the way Cassidy...if you are going to sport Coby Callait or whatever that bubblegum artisan is, please use her better side...her ASS

Coco Crisp will play first base for a nominal fee. - His Agent

Hell, the Mets need a 1B. I've been clamoring for them to figure out a way to send Delgado back to the AL where he can DH and picking up Nick Johnson.

April 7, 2008  03:45 PM ET

The Giants dont need a new first baseman ( ortmeier is servicible there) they need to get rid of the grey hairs on the team and commit to the youth movement, sure they will stink it up this year, but at least there will be something to look forward to, how many years do the plan on rebuilding?

April 7, 2008  04:19 PM ET

we will give you Scotty Thorman for some used baseballs that Barry hit into McCovey Cove

April 7, 2008  05:50 PM ET

What are the Giants going to do with a new first baseman? Finish 30 games out of first instead of 35?

April 7, 2008  06:04 PM ET

great news, i think thier in the market for a firstbaseman... and at second...and third. and everyother spot. i dont care who they get but they better not let go of cain and lincecum

April 7, 2008  10:28 PM ET

Maybe the Giants can talk Willie McCovey out of retirement...

April 8, 2008  01:04 AM ET

Barry Zito caught some boos during the home opener introductions.

Funny, my damned fellow Giants fans would NEVER boo the juicing king, but they sure jump on an overpaid arm.

April 8, 2008  10:13 PM ET

You know, theres just not alot say here. Giants will reach 25 wins by September 1st.

April 12, 2008  10:43 AM ET

How about saying to the A's "We'll take Johnson off your hands if you take Zito back"?

I like Barry Zito but he belongs in th AL where his curve ball will work better.

seattle fan here:

we've got a 1b that had great success in the NL, but little in the AL:
Richie Sexson

You've got a SP that had great success in the AL, but sucks bad in the NL - who you now owe 9 figures.
Barry Zito.

to take that potentially debilitating contract on (zito's), we need to have
Tim Lincecum. simple as that.

however, we can spare 99mph pitcher, CA boy and future allstar
Brandon Morrow.

and also
Jarrod Washburn.

this could work. tell your local GM.
