Rangers shift cools Guerrero
Posted: Monday April 07, 2008 06:38AM ET
Vladimir Guerrero used to pound the Rangers, batting .440 with 21 home runs, 18 doubles, 49 runs batted in and an .812 slugging percentage in his first 56 games against them. The Angels won 35 of those games. But early last season Texas Manager Ron Washington went to a shift against him, putting three infielders on the left side, and Guerrero -- who went hitless Sunday -- has batted a more mortal .294 without a homer in his last 18 games against the Rangers. The Angels are 9-9 over the span.

I'd like to beg the question as to whether he (Hamilton) has any room left for more tatoos, but I'm afraid of the answer.

Report Offensive CommentI still think the best shifts happen when "Big Papi" come to bat !!!

Report Offensive CommentOne would think that professional hitters would have more bat control to overcome these shifts. But history has shown that they work. Just look at Giambi. He's faced the shift for about 6 yrs now and he still tries to pull the ball. He'd hit .350 if he could learn to go the other way.

Report Offensive CommentVlad's been the worst Rangers killer since he signed on with the Angels. They have a lot of killers, their pitching being what it is, but he's been the worst.
These guys that have a shift played on them all the time wouldn't have to go the other way but a few times and the shift would stop.

Report Offensive CommentMaybe the extra fielder is messing up his peripheral vision. I'm sure Vlad has excellent vision, e.g. 20/10 or 20/15 and a guy in an area that you are not used to seeing in your peripheral messes w/ your concentration....believe it or not.
