Dodgers accuse Peavy of cheating

Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt was handed a picture of Jake Peavy, the image showing a dark substance on the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the San Diego Padres ace's extended right hand. "Pine tar," Honeycutt said. "Rosin's not that dark." The still picture was taken from Fox's national broadcast of the Padres' 4-1 victory over the Dodgers on Saturday and appeared on the message board of a Dodgers fan site later that night next to one of Peavy's hands magnified. The images didn't appear to be doctored, as they were from part of a sequence that was included in a highlight video posted on mlb.com. Whatever was on Peavy's hand was also visible on the video. Peavy, who threw a complete game and limited the Dodgers to two hits, denied that he cheated to get a better grip on the baseball.

Of course he denied it. What did you expect him to say??

'Aw....geez. Ya caught me guys!...'

Not that I'm saying that I know, believe, assume, etc that he did or didn't. I just don't think that anyone would be dumb enough to admit it if it came up in question.

Rick Honeycutt- professional pine tar identifier. Because it would be impossible for it to be anything else. Like...I don't know...dirt?

April 7, 2008  08:20 AM ET

Yeah dirt that is stuck to his fingers from using pine tar....

He's been in the game forever, I trust his knowledge of it.

Since modern day cheating (steriods/HGH) is being monitored so closely, maybe guys are resorting to some old fashioned cheating (pine tar, scuffed balls, spitters).

Why are people making a big deal out of this incident, but it was no big deal 2 years ago when Kenny Rogers clearly had pine tar on his hands.

April 7, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Let the "Forgot to wash his hands after taking a crap" jokes begin.

April 7, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Buut jeez, what is up with Hoffman? Another day, another blown save.

actually, everyone made a huge deal about it, it was a playoff game....

April 7, 2008  09:33 AM ET

but in his defense, it was extremely cold, and harder to grip the ball, what's Peavy's excuse?

So what happened to Kenny or the Tigers? That's right nothing, and being in a playoff game something should have happened.

C'mon! Cheating? Hey, Gotta stick up for Peav, he's on my fantasy team!

I love it (just like the Kenny Rogers thing in the WS) that people like to claim things they can't prove and then the media jumps all over it. The picture doesn't prove anything. So now, since this guy decides he's gonna claim Peavy was using Pine Tar, the media jumps on it and everyone thinks it's true. Of course, there is no way to prove it at this point but who cares. It's a juicy story, and there are a bunch of idiots out there reading it thinking, oh yeah, it must be true because it was printed on SI.com!

April 7, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Wouldnt suprise me. He doesnt do anything out of the ordinary to warrant the complete domination he has had these past few years unless you add in something like pine tar, then everything starts to make sense.

April 7, 2008  10:40 AM ET

let the whining of the losers begin! now that Honeycutt has planted the seed, Peavy won't have to do a thing -- he's won the psychological game. somewhere the oldtimers like Niekro are smiling broadly

April 7, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Back in the day, the Padres used to accuse Don Sutton of the same stuff..... oh yeah, that's right, Sutton did scuff, cut, grease and pine tar the ball. Where there's smoke, there's fire!

April 7, 2008  11:27 AM ET

I thought that there was something on his fingers when they showed the highlights on ESPN. Nothing you can do about it now, but the photos definitely weren't doctored. Go back and look at the video. It's pretty obvious that he has something on his fingers.

April 7, 2008  12:32 PM ET

Never mind asking Honeycutt , the real expert on pine tar issues is George Brett .

April 7, 2008  12:37 PM ET

that explains why they weren't swept.....
