Will defenses target Welker?

Jacksonville cornerback Rashean Mathis said before the Patriots' playoff meeting with the Jaguars that Wes Welker is playing slot receiver better than anyone in the NFL. That means teams are likely to try to take Tom Brady's security blanket from him more this season. One of the rule changes passed at the NFL's annual meeting was the elimination of the force-out rule. Officials no longer will have to judge whether a receiver would have gotten both feet inbounds if he hadn't been pushed out. Welker said it will be interesting to see how defensive backs try to take advantage of the rule change and whether they'll push receivers out before they come down with the ball. Welker said the rule change wouldn't alter his approach.

If they stop Welker they still have to deal with Moss and Gaffney.

The pushout rule has nothing to do with Welker. Brady hits him over the middle after about five yards. And if you want to try to stop him Moss WILL beat you.

Good luck covering Welker.

There was an earlier thread detailing Wes Welker's love of ice cream. Not drugs, steroids, underage girls, or domestic violence.

Who wouldn't want this guy on their team?

April 7, 2008  08:31 AM ET

Hey, I still wouldn't be surprised if someone tried to criticize he and the Patriots for it.

April 7, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Welker was the only WR gettin the ball in the Super Bowl loss. I don't think defenses will target Tom Bradys binky.

April 7, 2008  09:02 AM ET

overrated- this dude benefits from moss and playin with brady (who wouldn't) i mean they almost got to the superbowl with caldwell and gabney- come on now... I heard skip bayless say welker should have been all pro over TO- lol....

welker is solid, but all the press he gets- come on- he is matched up with safeties and linebackers... 8 yd catches, 10 yd catches- all benefit from moss bein on the other side -doesnt take a genius to see that

April 7, 2008  10:10 AM ET

5 to 8 yard dump-down and screen routes followed by 15 to 20 yard runs past lineman that are holding defenders all day. Don't even get me started about how he refuses to take a hit - he's a fall-down receiver. He's garbage. Next topic please.

April 7, 2008  10:19 AM ET

the push out rule was stuupid to begin with...either you catch the ball in bounds or you dont...if you get pushed out before you touch in bounds..your out of bounds....pretty simple to me.....welker is ok..he had a great year though....good play calling...things will change though...he proved that he was inept against the blitz..the giants kept sending rushers at him and he couldnt handle it...teams will be much more physical with him...lets wait and see

Defenses target the person with the ball. Give it to me and I'd be a target.
Let's go get some ice cream.

April 7, 2008  11:38 AM ET

C-smith you are stupid. Wes Welker refused to take a hit? He is a **** slot receiver. He always went up the middle, the most dangerous place for a receiver to be.

As long as it's Free Range Ice Cream I'm OK wwith it.

If it's factory raised and bludgeoned to death Ice Cream I'd have a problem.

Now THAT'S comedy.

"Will Defenses Target Welker?"

I hope the Cowboys target him. He would look great in a Cowboys uniform.

April 7, 2008  03:17 PM ET

No they won't. They'll target moss. If they have somoene good enough to target Welker, so be it. But he won't be the primary target for the defense. What happens when Welker is running loose? 14 points. Biggest choke job in the history of the NFL.

April 7, 2008  04:11 PM ET

jdang, I see youu didn't watch much of that game. It wasn't that they took away Moss, Stallworth or Gaffney and let Welker loose. It was the defensive line putting Brady on his back all game. The offensive line failed not the receivers. Go back and read all the articles about how the Giants beat them and every one of them puts the blame on the O-line. If I'm not mistaken he was sacked 5 times and hit 20. Yes biggest choke job in NFL history only because they are the only team to ever go 18-0. When will you see another team go 18-0 ? Maybe never. When will you see another team win the Superbowl ? Next year.

May many blessings come your way Broncosfan69 for your post.
Thank you,

Yeah they will target Welker now because he and Moss are the only threats. They have Gaffney, but I think that he is a scrub and they also have that Receicer from FLA jackson but he has yet to show up since they wasted that 1st rd pk on him.
