Summitt: Future holds no UConn, Tennessee series

Posted: Monday April 07, 2008 05:49PM ET

TAMPA, Fla. - Tennessee coach Pat Summitt reiterated Monday her belief that the resumption of the Lady Vols regular-season series with UConn was not in the future. "I hadn't really thought about it," said Summitt, on the eve of her national championship game Tuesday night against Stanford. "At this point I really don't see it happening." When asked if there was anything UConn coach Geno Auriemma could do to help mediate the situation, Summitt was clear. "Not now," she said.

It's Not!

i don't blame her... meet UConn in the playdowns for a national championship... not during the regular season.
Pat is my all time favorite basketball coach.
If Self doesn't leave for OSU, she should be the first women to coach a men's team.
Are you reading this T Boone ?
You could throw that money at Pat and still get the same results as she is tremendous.
Although i doubt she would EVER leave Rockey Top U.
She doesn't get her team ready to play, she has them on a mission of "search and destroy" every time they step on the court.
This is my coach and she has bigger stones then 90% of the male coaches in D1.

You are exactly right. I think the regular season game often acted as a demoralizer for the Vols. Many times in the 90s they lost in the regular season to UConn only to fall later to them in the tournament.

Pat hates Geno. That's it. And he seems like a tool.

Pat may be the best head coach in the nation - men or women. Only Coach K is close right now.

If you think about what she has done. Amazing. And put it in this context... imagine if that arch nemesis to the Lady Vols (being Uconn) had not arisen to be a great women's b-ball power - she could possibly have a few more titles. Incredulous. I'll be rooting hard for you to win that 8th one Pat, go Lady Vols.

Please tell me how Coach K is the best men's coach right now. His teams have underachieved for a few years now.

Pat stopped the series because of illegal recruiting practices by Geno. She is just taking the high road by not airing this out in the media. It was reported to the NCAA (and then "self reported by UCONN") but it is doubtful that the NCAA will do anything about it. Pat then took the only option left to her and discontinued the series. If you look at what has been said and not said like can Geno do anything to get the series back and Pat's quote "not now" is a pretty clear indication that she (and Geno) know that he crossed the line.

I never did like Geno and UCONN; I don't know why, but I don't like him.

Report Offensive Comment

It is funny before the season she said all along to ask Geno why the game was not being played and remember what he said. Something to the effect that Pat needs to admit that she just doesn't like him. Finally it came out the real reason and the NCAA won't do anything about it.
Pat has always taken the high road, even when Geno once called her an old woman (being all of two or three years his senior).

Please tell me how Coack Shechefksi is mentioned on a women's b-ball thread at all? What are you Dickie V?

Ole Pat is tired of losing to a better coach and program, so she quit playing them. The NCAA decided that Geno would play his conference foe that he split with in the season, in the elite 8. Ole pat didn't meet her conference foe that she split with until final 4. Both LSU and Rutgers were 2 seeds, the powers that be gave ole Pat the mighty Aggies.

She can't win in the 21st century NCAA women's basketball, and the NCAA knows this that is why her bracket is soft as possible year in and year out

When Ole Pat retires that will be a great day for all womens basketball, and the comment about coach K. Count how many titles he has, he hasnt been to 18 final fours to win 7 like Ole Pat has. She can be likened to a blind hog finding an acorn in the mud.

You have no class whatsoever.
She gets it (recruiting) done the right way unlike the great UConn Huskies who lost to Stanford. She actually was on the much tougher side of the tournament seeing as how UConn had the better seeding.

Report Offensive Comment

Sorry I'm not drinking the Ole Pat Kool Aid. To say that she was on the "Tougher side" is riduculous. Lets see the three teams that beat her this year; Stanford not on her side, Rutgers(clock malfunction) not on her side and LSU well she couldn't make Geno go through all three to get to her. That would have been to obvious. Discussing class would have been for Ole Pat to come out and say that her clock keeper won her a game.

Im drinking Kool-Aid right now I swear! Maybe its a sign.....

Very few people watch the regular season games anyways, and there are still lots of empty seats at the tournaments. She should do everything she can to advance the game.

The Uconn Violation of NCAA rules by arranging a tour of ESPN is minor, But there is more to this story. There were Major violations of NCAA rules by UCONN that are being investigated in the recruitment of Moore.
This isn't the only reason Pat cancelled the games with Uconn. It goes back to the NCAA tournament in Indy in 2005. Gino caused a sceen in a resturant and Pat walked out. Gino is a boil on the butt of humanity.

Report Offensive Comment

The UCONN recruiting violations have been exaggerated, fabricated, and blown way out proportion by Pat and the SEC. It's all sour grapes because UCONN has successfully recruited the payer of the year for the past few years. Pat reported to the NCAA that UCONN had Bird and Taurasi illegally drive Maya More to an event. In fact, Bird and Taurasi were in Russia at the time. So then Pat found the ESPN tour, which was indeed a violation. Moore could have called and arranged the visit herself (tours are free!), but since a UCONN employee made the phone call it is considered a violation. NCAA labeled it "secondary", case closed.

Pat had a great year with her star seniors, as did LSU and Stamford. We'll see what happens next year now that they have all graduated. SI has already picked UCONN number 1 in 08-09.

Gees!! I've admired Coach Summitt since I saw her coaching the '84 women's olympic basketball team. She is as honest as the day is long and doesn't call foul play fair. I'm ashamed of Geno since he coaches women, he's teaching them it's ok to cheat or be underhanded as long as you don't get caught. I hope the investigation reveals he used illegal recruiting methods. Pat would not do that, she's an excellent role model to her women. We need more women and coaches like Pat.
