Cal RB transferring to WSU

It looks like James Montgomery is going from one Pacific-10 Conference school to another. Considered one of the Sacramento area's most recruited football players while at Cordova High School, Montgomery is transferring to Washington State after spending two seasons at Cal. Montgomery selected Washington State after visiting Florida and South Carolina. Florida was considered his likely choice because of Montgomery's reported interest in reuniting with former high school teammate and current Gators receiver Carl Moore. Montgomery, who was projected as Cal's top running back entering spring practice, said he left the Bears because he was "not comfortable there".

After two years? What happened that no longer made him comfortable? It seems odd that a local kid leaves a school to go a couple hundred miles away because he isn't comfortable.

There has to be more to this story.

Berzerkely was getting to him perhaps?

April 8, 2008  10:10 AM ET

more likely he was expected to actually attend a class or two, declare a major, take tests, write papers ... you know, actually BE a college student and not just a football player ... always a problem for a school like Berkeley which actually does have academic standards and standing. go Bears!

He can't beat out Best and there are others coming up. He would not have been the featured back (like Marshawn Lynch or Justin Forsett) as, I am sure, he wanted to be.

April 8, 2008  12:15 PM ET

I think J Hova has a point; this just seems too illogical of a transfer.

April 8, 2008  12:28 PM ET

Florida never offered him. He wanted an offer, but it never came. Go Gators!

He wanted to be the featured back at CAL and probably wasn't going to be (even though Best is injured). Check out "Contra Costa Times" article on M.'s transfer: it looks like the writing was on the wall. (It was like that Trojan back lastyear who went to FLA. He will be eclipsed at UDub by Locker, but he could be the featured back.)

April 8, 2008  12:55 PM ET

They wanted him to take a turn living in the trees outside the new athletic complex site, and he has a moral obligation to not being a tree huggin dypshyt

Jabril, Locker is at Washington, not Washington State. He will definitely have the opportunity to play at Wazzu. He probably also is not in pot smoking, free-love, Clinton-loving, birkenstock wearing hippie stuff so that is why he wants to come to the nice family oriented atmosphere of Washington State. Oh, and he is probably heterosexual also. I know that is hard to find any where around the bay area.

April 8, 2008  04:02 PM ET

I can't believe that Cal would let him transfer to Wazzou. Almost every team doesn't let people to transfer to a team on the schedule during his career.

April 8, 2008  04:30 PM ET

George: I am sure you are right but by all accounts this kid was supposed to be the starter. I still think there is something behind the scenes of this one.

April 8, 2008  04:57 PM ET

Good point Irish... Looks like Cal doesn't think much of this guy... If they did... NO friggin way do they let him transfer to another school... In the Pac-10

Koogah, you are absolutely right. My apologies for confusing the two WA schools. M. will do well in Pullman.

J. Hova: M. played behind Best last year. This year, Tedford is desperate to field a winning team after the debacle of last year. That says that M. would be passed over as feature back this year, perhaps backing up Best. Yes, M. as supposed to start: they queue them up to play (Forsett playing behind Lynch, etc., as you know). I think M. didnt like what he was facing - and that means $$$$ in the pros. (I also think M. might not have liked the locker room. Meltdown there last year.)

April 8, 2008  06:06 PM ET

Honestly we don't need anymore running backs... its about our deepest position... he will have to compete with Tardy,Ivory, Richmond and redshirt frosh Mitz for playing time. Hopefully he will be a good one... like the ghost 2 years back

April 8, 2008  10:49 PM ET

thats surprising

this is the kind of tomfoolery the NCAA needs to get involved with kids transfering way to much to get what they want they got scholarships to the school they chose they should have to suck it up

The money quote is this: "Moores' preliminary analysis showed that nearly 400 students were granted entry to UC Berkeley in 2002 -- 3.5 percent of those admitted -- with scores of 600 to 1,000 on the SAT entrance exam, far below the 1,337 SAT average for that year's admitted class. A perfect score on the test is 1,600."

Hmmm, wonder how many of those kids were athletes? Living in California you get stories like this about once a year. The assuming comments by a typical Berkley fan about their players' academic integrity gets buried by the facts.
