Did Calipari blow timeout?

He kept the timeout in his pocket. For the rest of his career, he'll have to answer for that. For the rest of his life, he'll have to ponder it. All year long, a source close to the Memphis program said last night, John Calipari has practiced exactly what to do in those situation - up three, time running out. All season long, the Tigers practiced fouling in those situations. Maybe Calipari figured they would remember. He must have. He didn't call a timeout to remind them. They didn't foul. Mario Chalmers hit a game-tying 3. Overtime was a formality; Kansas won the game, 75-68.

Give me a break. Sure, it's a strategy, but that doesn't mean you're going to implement it in every situation. Maybe he had faith in his teams defense. They had been, up to that point playing stifling D on the 3 point line.

Dozier should've been at the top of the key to defend the three. Instead he was guarding the low post. Painful game to watch Memphis givie it to KU on a silver platter. (neutral fan interpretation).

The shooter hit it with a hand in his face ... you cant play any better D is that situation.

There is a reason its called the charity stripe.

Calipari blew a few things last night. He should have had his team foul. That is definitely the one mistake that should be on his mind.

That says it all. Rose was right there. It was just Kansas winning

In the post game news conference he said his team was trying to foul, and they actually pushed the KU player to the ground as he passed it to chalmers but there was no call.

I agree, with all the interviews with Calipari he scoffed at free throw questions. It was a karmatic inevitability those comments would come back to bite him on the ass. There was a lot of things Memphis could have done to win that game not just the free throws, although those are the most visible mistakes.

Congrats Kansas! I am a DUKE fan but I was rooting for you all the way. What an AMAZING win against the Tarholes. Go Jayhawks! Thanks for an amazing final game last night

Coach Cal and his team were in unfamiliar territory last night. They did reach well to being in a close game. Coach Cal had convinced his guys that FT weren't a problem. CDR even said he had never lost a game because of FT shooting.

Coach Cal is probably second guessing several things this morning. Not fouling before the Mario 3 is one of them. I heard him say he wanted to foul but Collins got away. Coach Cal if you told your guys to foul, I think that could have done that.

It was a situation of not playing in a close game down the stretch....oh my bad they beat UAB with a last second shot. That was doing what they are use to doing shooting the ball.

Hate UNC much? Dork.

What can you do.... Kansas didn't panic and made the plays... these type of games are always going to come out as shoulda, woulda, coulda since it comes down to a couple of key plays. Kansas made them. Memphis didn't. It doesn't mean they choked and it doesn't mean the coach blew it.... as much as I hate Calipari.

April 8, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Great thing that happened...made the Jayhawks national champs and my bracket so much better.

April 8, 2008  11:25 AM ET

What happened last night is just the exclamation mark to the greatest sports spectacle in the world. From the opening round to the OT 'ship, it gets no better than that. MARCH MADNESS!!! YOU GOTTA LOVE IT!!!

Hey bkg320,
hat is my point, Memphis and coach Cal were in situations like they were last night and the results are they (Memphis and Coach Cal) paniced. On the other hand Kansas has played some very close games (won some and lost some) so I think they were better prepared to handle the situation. CDR said he had never lost a game because of FTs. Guess he can change that tone.

April 8, 2008  12:56 PM ET

Niether team can admit to deserving the national championship:

Kansas got beat and took a neat miracle to pull off a win.

Memphis didn't have the testicular fortitude to hit open, uncontested shots from the line (aka free throws)

April 8, 2008  01:12 PM ET

I thought the in bounds steal & quick 3 pointer for KU with ~1 minute to go was a key play that wasn't even discussed post game.

April 8, 2008  01:19 PM ET

Coach Knight & Digger Phelps debated this issue last night afte the game; Knight said he would have taken the time out. But, hit 2 of 5 instead of 1 of 5 FT and it would not matter.
