Braves giving Spiezio second chance

One week after signing a minor-league contract with the Braves, Scott Spiezio pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor drunken-driving and hit-and-run charges from a December incident in Newport Beach, Calif. The Braves had been fully informed of the charges and Spiezio's intentions before they signed the veteran utility man to a non-guaranteed contract March 31 and assigned him to their Richmond affiliate. General manager Frank Wren and manager Bobby Cox met with Spiezio in person March 31 in Atlanta before signing the versatile switch-hitter, who they hope can stay out of trouble and earn a roster spot with their major league club.

At least he won't have to change the color of that creepy soul patch. That thing looks like it's alive...

That rabbit's foot on his chin sure wasn't very lucky.........for him or the rabbit.

Can you imagine the promotions some of these minor league clubs will come up with when Spiezio comes to their towns?

second chance my eye - this is at least his 5th chance. He's like a cat.

We must be getting desperate. Spiezio is not the type of player we want. He's a drunk and a thug. In the latest incident he not only drove drunk, crashed his car and left the scene of an accident.... he also punched a neighbor when he got home. And as noted by MeDumDum, this was hardly the first time. Why do these clowns get so many chances??

bkg320:

I would typically say in response to your outstanding question "It's because he can hit a ball"

But with this tool, I HONESTLY do not see any positives for a trade off with his suckidity

Spezio brings a wealth of practical legal knowledge to the clubhouse.

He and "Johnny Law" are tight.

Just goes to show that, if you can play the game, people will turn a blind eye 90% of the time.

Hey, maybe they'll sign Pacman Jones at the All-Star break!

He can pay a sponsor, he needs to be at the ball park. Most likely the safest place forhim.

April 9, 2008  03:47 AM ET

He will fit right in with the drunk wife beaters Bobby and Chipper!

April 9, 2008  01:41 PM ET

Who's next? Barry? If it's all about hitting a baseball, Barry should have a job. Spiezio is a .250 hitter. What's the upsdie?

April 9, 2008  01:42 PM ET

One correction. Bobby is the wife beater. Chipper is the one with the baby mama.
