Report: Huge OSU offer for Self

The only question now appears to be, "How much?" Because it certainly seems inevitable that Kansas coach Bill Self will be courted by his alma mater this week. The Tulsa World cited anonymous sources in a column on Sunday morning saying Oklahoma State is prepared to offer Self a contract rumored to be in the neighborhood of at least $3.5 million a year. The column also mentioned there could be a $6 million signing bonus for Self to return to Oklahoma State, where he played during 1981-85. "If somebody from Oklahoma State calls me, I'm not going to take the call," Self told reporters after the game. "It's my alma mater. But they haven't contacted me. I said this last week. I would recommend they go in another direction."

That would be difficult money to turn down. His stock is at a "52-week high". One way or another, Self better cash in on it. I would hope that KU would reneg his current contract and keep him in Lawrence. But I doubt that they would offer him anywhere near the almost $10 million that OSU will offer for the first year of his services.

April 8, 2008  08:56 AM ET

I don't care if the man just won 5 TITLES IN A ROW, 4 million a year is ridiculous... and a 6 million dollar SIGNING BONUS?! This crap is getting waaaaaaay out of hand. He's coaching a freakin' basketball team, not curing cancer!

I hope he takes that stupid booster's money and goes .500 for a few years before they run him out of town in his fleet of new Bentleys. If I were an OSU fan/alum I would be mad as hell. It's not Oklahoma State University, it's T. Boone Pickens University

April 8, 2008  09:07 AM ET

As I said before - show Self the money and he has no loyalty... He will go a running... ORU - TU - Illinois - Kansas - (Insernt Next big Payout here)

April 8, 2008  09:12 AM ET

That is a lot of money to turn down, but I think he stays. He has to listen to that offer though and that may cause some panic in Kansas.

April 8, 2008  09:37 AM ET

He got KU a championship. He can go on down to OSU if he wants to now. KU will be able to find another great coach. I still say give Larry Brown a call if Self leaves..

April 8, 2008  10:06 AM ET

eyesWIDEopen, yeah, I think there's a movement (underground though, lol) to change it to T. Boone State. We used to be Oklahoma A&M and personally I like that name.

College sports is way out of hand but so are the salaries of most pro athetes and coaches. Don't even get me started on those clowns that play soccer...and then act all hurt when they get kicked in the shins. We had kids playing soccer w/ combat boots in recess and of course we didn't even have shin guards, LOL!

April 8, 2008  10:23 AM ET

This point is tangential to the article's topic but it's been raised so...complaining about the salaries of people in sports is a little myopic. Look at the amount of revenue that is generated from the individual's efforts. If you want to look at it for the societal ramifications, then complaining about the emphasis placed on sport is valid. But, complaining that a person wants a cut of the money he is making for someone else is a sign of not seeing the big picture.

April 8, 2008  10:53 AM ET

I don't understand why all these coaches keep leaving a program like Kansas....

April 8, 2008  11:14 AM ET

As I wrote yesterday, some of you fail to understand that money isn't everything. If Self LOVES being at KU (not UK as I typed yesterday--sorry KU fans) then why leave? He coaches not for the money but for the love of coaching. And if he believes his life is perfect at KU even though he won't be making the $$$ Okie State (ie Boone Pickens University) is waiving in his face then why make the change and go into a situation that might end up disastrous when Pickens turns on him when he doesn't live up to Pickens' expectations?

But, we shall see if and when OSU calls him and offers. And don't forget that KU might up the ante too and make things just that more cozy for him at Kansas.

Anonymous sources? It was off a message board!! Unfounded speculation by a poster.

I can't believe how the national media has run with this baseless rumor...

April 8, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Can you "love" a school you've been at 5 years more than your alma mater? I'm not saying he should go,but I would understand if he does

April 8, 2008  12:11 PM ET

The last two coaches went to 1) the NBA and 2) North Carolina. NBA is the NBA. North Carolina is a Tier 1 program. Kansas is a Tier 1 program. Oklahoma State - not so much.

I saw someone write that Bill has an ego. What coach with an ego wouldn't want to be on the bench of a team that gets 5-6 prime televised games a year? Why would he even consider going to a team that only shows up on Monday night when they are playing a team like Texas or KU?

And really, what can you buy for $3.5 million that you can't buy for $2.5 or whatever Lew offers him?

Coach Self will continue to be a Jayhawk because KU is a coaching job that you don't leave for money.

April 8, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Coach Self won't be leaving anytime soon. What can you buy for $3.5MM that you can't buy for $2.5MM or whatever Lew offers him?

Plus let's keep in mind that with KU you get to show up on national TV 5-6 times a year whereas Ok State only gets to be on national TV if they are playing KU or Texas.

The KU coaching chair is one that has only had 8 people in it. Think about that. 8 coaches in 110 years.
Kentucky has had 10+.
UCLA has had 12.
North Carolina, 18.
Duke, 13.
You don't leave the KU coaching job because of money.

"And really, what can you buy for $3.5 million that you can't buy for $2.5 or whatever Lew offers him?"

I guess you forgot about the $6 million signing bonus? So it's more like $9.5 million in one year.

Please tell me you're kidding. Only Billy Donovan turns down more money to stay at a school. Granted, UF is the best job in all of college basketball.

Uhhhhhh, WHAT?! The best job in college hoops? Ladies and Gentlemen, it is official - we have located the biggest homer in all of Fan Nation.

April 8, 2008  01:33 PM ET

Florida is the best sports school. (Non UF grad) sorry rest of world.

April 8, 2008  01:34 PM ET

You jerks think that $3.5 million is alot but is ain't beans after taxes!

April 8, 2008  01:45 PM ET

Try $3.5 million + $6 million there HollyBull - even after taxes, its a lot of money but, in the end, he will just use it as leverage to get a raise at Kansas which is a much better program anyway

April 8, 2008  01:58 PM ET

Uh, yes $3.5 million is alot even after taxes. I'm guessing you're in a profession where you make more?
