Bears kicking tires on Mendenhall

The odds are against Rashard Mendenhall becoming a Bear, but the team wants to get to know the Illinois running back better anyway. So he'll visit Halas Hall on Thursday in one of a series of meetings with NFL teams in advance of the April 19-20 draft. Mendenhall is also visiting the Bengals, Jets, Cowboys and Panthers, but not scheduling a visit doesn't mean a team isn't interested. The Lions, Texans and Bucs could also be in the market for a first-round running back.

What kind of tires - steel-belted radials? I hope they don't mean kicking him in the shins - that is quite painful.

NO!!!!

If they Bears want to be successful on the offense first thing they need to do is makeover their offensive line. Thats a fact. No arguing

I love RM but he prolly wont even be successful here if hes drafted by the Bears

I agree. The Bears need OL help.

He should go with the Bucs...

April 8, 2008  08:35 AM ET

Please take him. I want the Lions to go O-line....This draft is very deep on RBs...

April 8, 2008  09:10 AM ET

We will take him in H-town if he slides to 18 but I doubt he will even be available at 14 for the Bears, and won't get past teh Cardinals at 16.

He won't be a Bear. Dumb story. Thanks for wasting my time though.

April 8, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Also, I bet his stock drops a bit, because he has never run in a pro-style formation... the Bears should trade down and pick up a Henne or Brohm and an O-line guy later.

First thing the Bears need is a QB. Then offensive line, then WR help.

April 8, 2008  11:24 AM ET

The guy is a strong runner, has a good work ethic, and will be a vast improvement over Benson who runs to lineman and seems to have zero energy in any case. The Bears should be so lucky to get him. Prediction: unless they trade up - and they won't - he'll be gone. (PS While there are aging parts of the line, many of the players were hurt last year. If they can get and keep the line healthy, they won't need to draft a lineman - this year.)

April 8, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Sounds like the Bears may also be needing some LB help, too (see Urlacher, Brian).

April 8, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Unless the RB is a freak of nature- McFadden, Peterson
why draft a RB with a high draft pick?
- didn't they learn their lesson from Benson?

If the team has a good line- anyone can run through it competently
(see the Broncos over the last 10 years)
If the line is terrible- the RB will get pounded & even a great runner will last only a short time.

April 8, 2008  01:01 PM ET

I've watched this kid a lot in college, and in 5 yrs he may well be the best RB in this draft class. McFadden is a beast, make no mistake about it, he's extremely gifted athletically..but he's more of a gamebreaker still at his size than Mendenhall. Rashard has the speed to take it to the house, but he's more well equipped to take an NFL pounding between the tackles for 4 tough qtrs and 25+ carries.

Wasn't there another NFL player named Mendenhall from some years ago ? I'm not sure but I think he played for the Giants.

April 8, 2008  01:58 PM ET

Benson looks like a bust. Maybe it's the weather in Chi-town being too cold for a Texas kid. Mendenhall played in Champaign and can continue to wear the orange & blue. The Bears need to do this and then get OL help in the later rounds. A veteran QB would serve them well also.

"What kind of tires - steel-belted radials? I hope they don't mean kicking him in the shins - that is quite painful."

Could hurt his draft stock too.

I really would love to see this guy in a Cowboys uniform, he is going to be the next coming- behind A. Peterson!

For everyone pining that the Bears should get a QB first and foremost need to answer this. What good is a QB when he's sitting on the bench injured because the o-line stinks? They need to protect the passer and create running lanes or else it's last year all over again.
