Garrard wanted Romo money

David Garrard wanted the big contract. He just didn't want it at the expense of an agitated fan base or a bitter owner. So while Garrard's agent sought Tony Romo money, Jacksonville's quarterback settled for less -- but more than enough for him. Garrard on Monday signed a seven-year contract worth $60 million. With about $20 million in guaranteed money, including $9 million up front, it's more than enough for Garrard to afford the dream house he and his young family recently built. The contract makes Garrard, 30, the highest-paid player in Jaguars history.

thats a bust waiting to happen. A career backup has one good year and all of a sudden he gets 60 mil?

April 8, 2008  09:17 AM ET

I can't beleive they paid him that kind of money, the Texans are paying Schaub 7 million per and Garrard is getting 8.5, take away his two RB's and he is a pile of crap!

Garrard is a solid QB but not worth that much money. He is a product of his running game. If you shut down the running game, he cannot beat you. That's a lot of money for a QB who can't win his own game.

What is the NFL coming to when they expect a QB to build his dream home for under $29 million? Even worse, he'll now have to make an average $535,000 per game.

I guess none of it matters because he is not going to be there for 7 seasons. There is a chance he'll start putting up huge numbers. But then he'd want the contract reworked. Say $15 million a season, $30 up front.

5 years 29 mil? does this guy think he is better than tony "yes jessica, that IS a tuna." romo?

April 8, 2008  09:22 AM ET

that 5 years, 29 mil i mentioned is the ballpark of what he shoud've received

Rob Johnson anyone???

Wait.....He was a back up QB who landed a FAT contract too...

April 8, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Good for him, and he is only a career backup because the new regime went after Leftwich, he was positioned to be the man way back then. They dragged this poor guy through $h!t, he should get a deal bigger then he is worth. The only down side is his age in this one...

Thats great insight, being that every QB in the league falls under that besides P M and T B...

This is money spent on franchise stability. Not just on David Garrard. Instability at the quarterback position has been a thorn in the Jaguars' paw. Coach Del Rio made a swift, decisive move in cutting Leftwich last preseason and the team recognized a new leader who had 100% of the coach's backing. The Jags are entrenching Garrard and thereby minimizing variables.

April 8, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Take the money and run.

But I'd never have paid him that. Sure he doesn't toss INTs but he doesn't toss many TDs either.

I think it goes to show how thin the QB position really is in the league.

April 8, 2008  10:15 AM ET

Romo ain't worth that kind of loot either...right, Jessica? LOL...

April 8, 2008  10:18 AM ET

NFL players are overpaid.

April 8, 2008  10:38 AM ET

you guys are crazy! He is a great qb! They are getting him cheap.
he is worth every penny.

April 8, 2008  10:53 AM ET

He may be the beneficiary of a great running game, and he may not be able to win a game by himself, but he won't lose it either and that is damn important. Only 3 INTs is amazing.

April 8, 2008  11:11 AM ET

*laughs so hard he is almost crying* thats a good one.

April 8, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Well deserved - this guy is going to be a solid QB for years to come. Imagine if he sheds about 15 to 20 pounds and actually gets quick? He'll be able to move around the pocket more and outside of it as well.

April 8, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Cheap? Are you serious? I like Garrard but there is no way he should have gotten over 45 Mil. Most of his money are probably going to be bonuses, but he is already 30. He has only played in 23 Games in the last two seasons out of 32.

He had a good year last season when he wasn't injured but he only had 10 TD's and 9 Int's the year before and played in one less game. There is no way he should be asking for what Romo got.

But hopefully it works out..........Watch Joey Porter light it up this season with Garrard.......if he stays healthy.

J Hova, I don't think any qb wins a game by themselves. Is he Tom Brady, no but good qb's are hard to find and I'm assuming the Jaguars know this that's why they paid him so much. What has Romo done to deserve his loot, what about Schaub-a backup who was unproven, got paid big money as well.
