Braves prospect suspended for HGH

Braves top prospect Jordan Schafer's career just hit a troubling detour: drug suspension. The 21-year-old center fielder was suspended 50 games for the use of human growth hormone (HGH), in violation of baseball's drug policy. The suspension was announced Tuesday by the major league commissioner's office and took effect immediately. There isn't believed to be a reliable test for HGH, but several major league players have been penalized for being linked to the substance without testing positive.

How did he get caught if there's no test?

April 9, 2008  08:00 AM ET

That's what I want to know. Was there receipts? Needles? Some, nay, ANY physical evidence? There has to be something that positively links him....right?

April 9, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Well, he did apologize, so he obviously did it, but I would like to know how they found out as well.

"penalized for being linked to the substance without testing positive"

The Steroids Era might include a chaper on McCarthyism.

This guy came almost out of nowhere last year to rise to the #1 prospect level from #25. Wonder why? Kotsay was clearly the short term solution in CF until Schafer was ready to go & most thought that would be next year, or even this year if Kotsay faltered. Now??? You have to wonder what will happen to his skills once he's off the juice..... and certainly the halo is off of the golden boy..... and this is on the heals of the stupid Spezio signing..... what are the Braves doing here?

April 9, 2008  10:25 AM ET

Well, at least Andruw Jones is hitting .105, so either Kotsay or Schafer (or anyone else, for that matter) is looking like an upgrade..... it's really disappointing and sad to watch the decline of an "old 30" year old, fat Andruw Jones. The way he's declined you wonder if he's really 35. Even though Andruw had some great homerun numbers, watching him daily had become painful for the last several years, with the exception of his 50 homerun year where it seemed he was getting back on track..... it's really too bad...

I get the point of what youre saying here but the guy came out and apologized to his team and the fans so obviously he got caught and knows he is guilty

April 9, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I get that point too.

April 9, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Good catch the cheaters...How bout them Baltimore O's people....
Anybody but the Yankee's or Red Sux in that division!!

April 9, 2008  12:51 PM ET

This is a perfect example of why players cheat. He went from, I think, A ball last year to almost making the roster this Spring. That's not normal & should be a red flag. The biggest hyped draftee for the Braves was Jeff Francoeur. Local boy. Huge visibility in the area for a HS athlete. He had to progress through AA, AAA, etc. and was not promoted to the majors for 2 1/2 years. This is the top guy to come through their system in a long time. Schafer went from not being on the radar to almost starting in CF way too fast.

damn it! Don't these guys learn. 50 games is going to hurt him to get ready for next year!

Dont worry. You probably dont want the HGH-less version of Jordan Schafer anyway

April 9, 2008  04:36 PM ET

right, we rather have a player who chokes down the stretch like Reyes.

You'd give your right nut for Reyes and you know it

April 9, 2008  05:09 PM ET

With all these minor league suspensions HGH could mean " he got his" !!!

Well, Bud Selig and the MLB lost my credibility when they refused to do anything about McGuire, and then Bonds, and now the knee-jerk, after-the-fact reactions.

Lets just hope the NFL doesn't lose this credibility.
