Garcia wants new Bucs contract

For the first time in five years, Jeff Garcia was thrilled he did not have a change of uniform or address in the offseason. The grass has never grown under the cleats of the vagabond quarterback. And it's starting to look as if the Bucs do not want Garcia to put down too many roots in Tampa Bay. Garcia said Tuesday that he's disappointed the team hasn't been willing to tear up his contract and reward him with a new deal that would enable him to finish his career with the Bucs.

nobody ever gives this guy the credit he deserves. With the exception of his stay in Cleveland, he has done nothing but blow away peoples' expectations wherever he has gone. He was a Pro Bowler in San Francisco, and carried them to their last playoff appearance, but they let him walk for Rattay. Brilliant. He stepped in and did a better job running the Eagles than McNabb did that season, and got rewarded by not being re-signed. The BUcs signe dhim hoping he could hold the ship together for a season and he stepped in and made the team a winner again. When is he going to get the respect he deserves? He may not have the strongest throwing arm of all time, but he's fairly accurate, makes good decisions, rarely turns the ball over, and sure seems like a good leader in the huddle to me. Come to think of it, maybe the 49ers should look into getting him back...

I'll say this, of all twelve quarterbacks on the BUCS roster, he's the best one. Better pay him......Or you could just trade for the rights to Brett Favre.......aint that right Jake?

Play one year & ask for a new contract. Why not sign an incentive-laced contract last year? Why can't owners tear up contracts & pay less money when players don't live up to expectations?

pish posh.. the union would never allow that !

He's 38...and the Bucs have like 5 QBs on the roster. Just play Jeff..

They signed you to a 3 year deal Jeff, thats plenty of time to end your career there. Just say what you mean, you're disappointed the team has not thrown truck loads os cash at you after 1 season.

What's a pish posh - some kind of NE appetizer?

April 9, 2008  09:42 AM ET

49ers made a mistake cutting him too soon, but Just remember Bucs last Playoff game, Old Garcia and his happy feet couldnt save them, 38 is old for QB, he came a long way, be happy in your work Jeff!
You could be still playing in CFL.

It's the same as a British tish tosh but with tasty seasonings added.

Or he could retire, and host a "fantasy football camp" at his alma mater.....just and idea.

goCanada! i agree with everything you said... Garcia does nothing but win... he is extremely underrated and it is a shame that earlier on in his career a team didnt stick with him as their QB for long term... 49ers were too caught up in finding the next Montana or Young that they under appreciated what Garcia did for them... send a little more cash his way in incentives

Like to see him in a Vikings uniform.

Dave, owners do that all the time when players get cut. I am sick and tired of players wanting new contracts after a year or two. It gets tiring hearing them complain about how much money they aren't making. Try getting a real job and see how much that pays.

Umm, they do. NFL contract's are only one-year deals. If they don't live up to expectations, they cut them.

Well spoken.

The Bucs are not idiots. The whole entire point Jeff Garcia is a great QB in the NFL is because hes a great leader, underrated, undersized and you dont have to PAY HIM ALOT and you get more than what you pay for him (unlike everyone else in the NFL)

April 9, 2008  01:47 PM ET

Garcia limped (literally) into the playoffs. As for more money when you win a playoff game Jeff. Until then, shut up and play.

I would love to donate some child support to his wife.

April 9, 2008  03:40 PM ET

The Niners definitely never should have let him go. However, after the stellar season he had with the Eagles 2 seasons ago if he's unhappy with his paycheck he should fire his agent because he should have been able to parlay that performance into a pretty good contract. He doesn't seem like a complainer to me so I am not totally convinced about the validity of this whole posting myself.

Plain and simple fact of the NFL: You don't overpay for a QB who is getting close to 40. Make him play under his current deal or rely on the fact that you have a long list of back ups.
