Butkus wants name off LB award

Dick Butkus made quite a name for himself as the most fearsome linebacker in NFL history. Now the revered Bears icon wants sole jurisdiction over the use of his name. That is why the Hall of Famer took legal action to have his name removed from the annual award that honors college football's premier linebacker. A federal district court in California has ruled the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando does not have the right to use the name, picture or identity of Butkus in connection with the collegiate linebacker award program that has been known as the "Butkus Award." The club has been presenting the award since 1985. Butkus grew dissatisfied with the club's inability to use the award program to generate significant charitable revenues.

Say it isn't so Dick! The award just won't sound right with any other name attached to it!

April 9, 2008  08:26 AM ET

GOOD! The best linebacker ever was Lawrence Taylor anyway.

April 9, 2008  08:32 AM ET

hey jackman... taylor wasn't even a linebacker in college, and certainly wasn't the best college linebacker, either... butkus won the national championship at illinois... taylor didn't win anything at unc

I realized that after I posted Doctor K....was thinking of the NFL.

So is he pissed because his name is on the award or because the award named after him isn't generating donation money? Sounds pretty weak to me. I mean who waits 23 years and then all of a sudden decides, "Gee, I don't want to be honored anymore as a great linebacker?" Next thing you know, he's going to ask the last 23 recipients to give their awards back because they have his name on them. What a punk!

Yeah, and you can call it the "I was coked-up out of my head " award

April 9, 2008  10:22 AM ET

This seems like a retty lame move by Dick. Oh well, does it really amtter what they call the award? Will it matter to the LB who receives the award next year? I doubt it.

April 9, 2008  10:33 AM ET

it is his name, i guess he can do what he wants with it. most of the kids today say dick who, anyway when they hear it. maybe he is saving his name for the dick butkus best actor award or the dick butkus high IQ award. hahahaha

METS = CHOKERS

My comment gets dumber and dumber dosnt it. Mets and Tigers who?

April 9, 2008  10:49 AM ET

wow lt over dick...i don't think i agree with that one.....

April 9, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Not enough contributions to him is most likely the reason...

April 9, 2008  11:06 AM ET

If he doesn't agree with the award he has the right to take his name off of it. I don't see how that makes him a punk. He is standing up to a business entity that is misrepresenting his legacy and profiting from it.

April 9, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Dynamic, How exactly are they misrepresenting his legacy by giving out an award to the best linebacker in college by naming it after him? I would say they are preserving his legacy. Without this award there are a lot of younger players who would have ni idea who he was.

Oh, I agree, in some senses they are preserving his legacy, although I'm sure it will somehow survive beyond the award. My point is that if the man is still alive he ought to have some say over how he wants his career and legacy to be presented, and if the award doesn't agree with with his character, he has the right to remove his name.

April 9, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Dynamic, I don't disagree at all. I think everyone should have the right to control how thier name is used. It would be nice to know the details of why he chose to do this. I am sure they will just find another LB to name the award after that will be proud the award is named after him.

The Seau Award....

April 9, 2008  12:19 PM ET

They should pick a dead one for the new name. Less complaining.

How about Bosworth? He's close enough to dead and if not the way his career went down the toilet he'll let them use his name for a twinky donation to the Ryan Leaf Foundation for Professional Failures. Co-sponsored by Ralph Sampson and Mark Prior.

jackmanrob, your kidding me!! The only thing LT was good at was snortin a line of coke.

April 9, 2008  12:47 PM ET

Come on Butkus don't be a.....You should be honored to have your name on this award.
