New leader in USC QB race

USC's third week of spring practice began Tuesday with what appeared to be a subtle shift in the quarterback competition. Unlike the first two weeks, when Mark Sanchez shared some of the first-team snaps with Mitch Mustain and Aaron Corp, Sanchez took every one. Sanchez performed much like he did in Sunday's scrimmage; short on highlight-reel plays but long on efficiency. With only six workouts left -- including two scrimmages -- the fourth-year junior from Mission Viejo seems to have widened the gap in the race to become John David Booty's successor.

I am sure Mustain and Corp are trying to get Paris Hilton to give Dirty Sanchez a bad case of **** to knock him out of contention!

Mustain didn't play well in Spring practices, so it makes sense that Sanchez is the leader. I just wonder if Mustain doesn't impress over the summer does he make a move to transfer to a 1-AA?

It's obvious that he can play the position but his NFL dreams won't be fullfilled holding a clipboard for a long period of time at 'SC.

wouldn't be surrpised. im guessing if that's what he does it's not going to be to get into the NFL though. there aren't too many 1-AA quarterbacks in the pros. what year is mustain?

April 9, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Wow I thought Mustain was going to beat Sanchez out for the starting QB position out right. I guess it's better to wait and be ready, than to start when you aren't ready.

April 9, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Mustain is a redshirt sophomore. This would be his third year in college. He still has three years of eligibility left.

So, I guess he can stick around for this season but if he doesn't see the field and with Matt Barkley coming around in '09, he has to go.

April 9, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Not sure why Mustain isn't ready .... he's had a year to work out and be ready & supposedly that's what he was doing. If he is really "all that" (or all he and his parents think he is) then he should be able to easily beat out Sanchez.

Sanchez was a disappointment last year in the games that he played & will really need to step it up.

April 9, 2008  10:26 AM ET

its not like sanchez was bad in the games last year. and he did happen to be the gatorade national player of the year in high school. i say good for him, he waited his turn just like booty did for the same amount of time. congratulations to him and i hope he does well.

According to all I've read Mustain has had a good spring, sporting more big play ability but less consistency. The coaching staff has more faith Sanchez due to his familiarity with the offense. Reading between the lines the job was his to lose all along. Also Carroll has tended to give all his big QB recruits their shot, usually in order of seniority - and as the article mentioned Mustain is equivalent to Corp in terms of time spent in USC's system. With the play of the WRs still in question I think that is the more wise route.

Sanchez played fine in his few games as a replacement for JDB, at least to the level of his teammates which were dealing with serious injuries. I thought he displayed a good instinct for winning despite inconsistent play. He has yet to show what he can really do on the field, with the team completely his, and he might surprise a few people.

Matt Cassel was drafted by the Patriots in 2005 and he only threw two passes his senior year at USC. (played behind Palmer and Leinhart during Leinharts' Jr year). Cassell is still on the NE roster.

what's a 'fourth year junior'? -- when identifying athletes, probably wisest to refer to their status in terms of years of eligibility rather than academic progress, which is a function of units completed vis-a-vis units required for graduation vis-a-vis units taking each quarter/semester -- sounds like Sanchez has this year and next, while Mustain has this year plus two -- Sanchez will most like start this year, at least the first few games -- Mustain, if he truly has the goods, would be wise to stick around

April 9, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Mustain IS ready... We'll see a lot of good things from this guy!

Can't wait for 08' - Fight On!

April 9, 2008  11:36 AM ET

fourth year refers to their year in school while junior refers to their elegibility. it's interchangable with redshirt junior. redshirt junior sounds stupid though.

anyways. i think mustain should definitlay transfer after this year if he has two years of elegibility. he seems like a solid prospect, he could probably get picked up by at least a mid major. the same thing is going to happen to antonio henton at ohio state. he's not going to start this year then next year im guessing terrelle pryor will start. henton has a chance at being a really good quarterback but most likely never will if he sticks around at ohio state.

whoever the QB is the Trojans better make it to the championship game this year... this is a down year for everyone else in the PAC 10 with Oregon losing its 2 playmakers and ASU not quite at the same level as USC... time for the USC vs. SEC showdown everyone has been waiting for

April 9, 2008  12:21 PM ET

just ask Matt Cassell how it is in the NFL....the guy backed up Leinart and Palmer....now he's getting paid winning championships (except for last year)
in N. England....backing up Brady

April 9, 2008  12:23 PM ET

SoxSideIrish, that was supposed to happen last year. It seemed destined for USC vs. LSU in the NC, esp. with Les Miles' preseason claim that the Pac-10 is weak compared to the SEC. When it seemed like all the stars were aligned, Stanford interrupted the party. I think that would have been a great matchup.

This coming from a TRUE-BLUE prison guard. What kind of favors did you give your inmates???

April 9, 2008  01:09 PM ET

bkg320- mustain has been at SC for a year, the problem is that he was on the service team, running the opposing team's playbook. he never got a real chance to learn the SC book. Not only that, when youre the scout team QB, the coaches make you throw specific balls, even if the receiver is covered and your OL can't contain the 1st team DL, so you dont have much time to throw. All that creates bad habits.
I think Sanchez will surprise a lot of people this year, he is the antithesis of what people complained about Booty last year.

Mustain's probably thinking he should've stayed at Arkansas now where the starting job would almost definitely of been his.
