Cordero rips Brewers tactics

Francisco Cordero said Tuesday night that the Brewers blew their chance to keep him as their closer by not working out a contract extension before the 2007 season. Cordero said it never would have come to that had the Brewers given him a contract extension in the spring of '07. General manager Doug Melvin said the Brewers did offer Cordero a two-year extension that would have turned into a three-year deal because his 2007 contract would have been torn up. Melvin seemed surprised that Cordero would characterize a $42 million offer as not being aggressive.

Hey...$42 million cant buy you much these days.

April 9, 2008  08:44 AM ET

You dont have to waste your breath trying to make the Brewers sound or look bad. They will and have done it on their own after giving an overated PED using Gagne tons of cash, after a brutally sup par embarassing season with the rangers and especially the Red Sox last year.

April 9, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Oh yeah, the Brewers REALLY blew this one. Whatever, you guys are clueless. The Brewers have the best record in baseball. Why? Because they have been able to add DEPTH to their relieving corps. Gagne has made some mistakes, but not fatal ones which cost us the game. THAT'S the difference between this year and last year. #1 We know have more depth #2 Our blown saves but us in a tie, not a loss. Do your homework before you trash the best team in baseball boys. Do your homework.

April 9, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Yes, the best record in baseball through the first two weeks. They're on track to win the WS!! Go Brewers......

not.

April 9, 2008  10:05 AM ET

This guy needs to shut up.....they offered him $42 mil.....more than he is probably worth. Don't badmouth a franchise because you didn't accept a generous offer

April 9, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Generous to us and "not aggressive enough" to him...
This just points out the disparity between the pay of these "entertainers" and the paying public, it is a PR problem for baseball. None of them, teams included, deserve the money they are given, and I mean given and not earned.

April 9, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Ha, the best team in baseball. That may be the funniest thing I've read this year. Celebrate while you can. Didn't I see Gagne blow a save last night. Luckily his teammates bailed him out in extra innings.

April 9, 2008  10:17 AM ET

AllStars, I agree that pro athletes are overpaid, but sports is a big business and if the owners are making a ton of money, then the players(who actually generate all the revenue) should definitely be getting a pice of the pie. If my company does good, then it reflects in my pay as well.

April 9, 2008  10:36 AM ET

maybe he can get a big contract from ny (either one) and go there to under achieve just like the rest of them.

April 9, 2008  10:41 AM ET

Jason70,
I included the teams in the group that is given too much money. The disconnect between the jobs they do and the money they make is staggering, all of them.

April 9, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Allstarz, I agree they get paid huge sums of money for playing a game when many people with much harder jobs get paid far less, but the whole entertainment industry is way overpaid. Actors get $20 million for 1 movie that they work on for 4-6 months. It's the old law of supply and demand. Only so many people have the skills neccessary to play at the pro level. Whether they deserve it or not the slaries are going to continue to incraease.

April 9, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Believe me, i understand the economics of it. I am just pointing out that the difference in his perspective and the fans perspective is a PR problem for baseball, one that most fans simply ignore. To pay attention to this glaring inequity would drive many fans away, as it did after the strike season. I am not ranting on it, just pointing it out. It is like an elephant in the room, noone is looking at it because they are too busy watching the games and the standings, but that can change quickly.

April 9, 2008  11:05 AM ET

Sports and Entertainment economics is retarded to anyone not in the industry -in the industry, the participants will never be satisified with what they receive(of course, the industry attracts those types whose egos match their belief in their value). Outside of it, it will never make sense that people playing kids games or playing pretend (acting) can commnad such dough when teachers, soldiers, nurses, cops, etc, have to rob peter to pay paul in order to make ends meet (well, maybe not the cop!). Stunning math indeed ... so to hear someone complain that 42mill isn't aggressive enough ought to be justification for 50 lashes (especially in George Bush's America!)
And saying the Brewers are the best team in the league at this point is like posting an NBA score 5 minutes into the first quarter - it's something that's very likely to change as time moves ahead ...

April 9, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Cordero is just one cheese biscuit away from not being able to put on anybody's uniform.

April 9, 2008  11:34 AM ET

I hear you Allstarz, and I don't disagree. I can't say I blame the players though. If the owners are willing to pay that much, then I'd try to get as much from them as I could as well. I do get tired of hearing them complain about $42 million contract offers. Just like Spreewell saying he needed to feed his family and didnt take a year $21 million contract. Just plain stupid.

Seriously. Fourteen million per year is nothing to sneeze at in any way, shape, or form.

April 9, 2008  02:57 PM ET

Why is Cordero blowing smoke right now? Just play ball and move on. The bitter words make him look condescending.

April 9, 2008  04:16 PM ET

I went to the grocery store today and the bill was $1M. I gotta feed my family, you know & I can't do it on $42M.

April 9, 2008  05:01 PM ET

I was a pitcher - I am agressive - give me the 42 mil. !!!

April 9, 2008  06:38 PM ET

David,
Best team in baseball? Are you kidding me? We are talking about the Brewers, right? They're going nowhere. They'd be lucky to get 3rd place. Go back to your pipe.
