Why Self won't quash OSU rumors

Bill Self has told others that he wants to stay at Kansas, but he hopes he won't have to do it at the current rate. Self makes less than KU football coach Mark Mangino, who brings in $1.6 million per year. Self made it sound as if the most important thing for him wasn't a jaw-dropping yearly figure like the one Oklahoma State is expected to offer, but the longevity of a new deal. Oklahoma State is expected to call Self soon, and athletic director Mike Holder certainly won't be bashful. A Tulsa World column reported a rumor that Holder was prepared to offer Self a deal worth $3.5 million a year with a $6 million signing bonus.

He won't quelsh the rumors because they are giving him great leverage with Kansas. He's going to get his money, and his "security".

I wouldn't quash the rumors either. They give him leverage, even though he just signed a 5 year extension last year. I guess that's not enough security.

April 9, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Just take the freakin' money already, and enjoy your career at Oklahoma Stae Booneversity.

April 9, 2008  10:39 AM ET

Oops, that was Oklahoma State Booneversity.

April 9, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Didn't he just get a new contract last year for something like 6 years @ 1.3 Million? Man that sounds like security to me but I don't blame him one bit. With OSU throwing around figures like 3.5 Million I would keep the rumors going. Heck I would even start a few myself.

April 9, 2008  11:24 AM ET

If he goes to OSU, I wonder if he'll show up at KU games wearing a Jayhawk sticker!!!

April 9, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Apparently the 5 years left on a contract he signed last year means nothing.

April 9, 2008  11:55 AM ET

5 years DOESN'T mean anything when he just brought the jayhawks their first national titel in 20 years. He's looking for longterm job security and he has every right to use leverage like this.

In these times when coaches can be ousted just 2 years after being in the Final Four (see LSU), these guys have to be aggressive in securing their income. Some people may not like it, but sports at all levels these days is all about "what have you done for me lately?"

April 9, 2008  12:56 PM ET

I would leverage too - my way right out of Kansas and back to OSU where he belongs. Big tradition, Kansas - with Monday night's championship, they now have a whopping 3 titles, just 1 more than OSU. Give him 3-4 years, and he'll have OSU's third one as well.

dr_craig -- The Okie State championships were in 1945 and 1946, when all of the real men were in the military. If we're going to look at ancient history, KU also has championships in 1922 and 1923, although they were awarded by Helms, rather than the NCAA.

I would further note that KU is universally ranked as one of the top 3 or 4 basketball programs nationally. Okie State is not even consistantly in the top 3 or 4 programs in the Big 12.

With 1943 wins, KU is one of only 3 programs with over 1900 wins North Carolina with 1950 and Kentucky with 1966 are the others.

Whether you admit it or not, Okie State simply does not have the history or tradition of KU in basketball.

April 9, 2008  02:04 PM ET

He wants to go home and who can blame him. Besides money talks and Boone Pickens could buy the state of Kansas if he does not already own at least a piece. I think Bill Self may also like being the guy who made OSU a national power again. Being the man at your own school can be more enticing than being the man at a school that was already established long before him. Me personally i'd rather be Jerry Tarkanian who established a schools legacy than a guy who continued a legacy or added to it

April 9, 2008  02:18 PM ET

Bruinswin, if they get fired with 2 years left on athier contract they still get paid for those 2 years. I find it hard to feel sorry for these guys. You sign the contract you should complete it. I am sick and tired of coaches leaving schools a year after they sign a new contract or an extension(see Rich Rodriguez) I am quite sure he is financially secure with the 5 years left on his contract.

April 9, 2008  04:41 PM ET

The longer this lingers, the more "Self-ish" Bill will look.

April 9, 2008  04:49 PM ET

Going to Kansas from Illinois was all about winning a championship. If he leaves, it's all about the money.... which is fine, but don't try to say it's about "going home".... it's f**king Oklahoma!

This guy reminds me of all the "one hit wonders" in the music world. Screw him he's only as good as the players on the floor.,

If he bolts, will they rename the Roy room at the barbershop the Bill room?

Security is someone afraid of losing their house because of the mortgage scam. Not some basketball coach who has a five year multi-million dollar deal looking for more. The Final Four was boring because it was a bunch of jerks jockeying for more money and nothing more. I wish Davidson had made it, that's college basketball.
