First fired manager could be...

Doubts have dogged him during his four years in charge in Toronto. John Gibbons has been portrayed as underqualified and overwhelmed. He's been cast as the dugout puppet manipulated by minor-league roommate and club GM J.P. Ricciardi. There's little doubt that Ricciardi maintains ultimate authority over team and personnel decisions. But when a call needs to be made during the games, Gibbons makes it. Last year at this time, he was given a $650,000 extension to cover this season. There has been no extension this spring. The message is fairly clear -- if this team stumbles early, it will be Gibbons' head on the block.

If he is underqualified and overwhelmed then, how did he get the job? He set himself up for failure. Did he think this was a learn on the job gig?

I honestly don't think he is to blame. They have to stay healthy... and produce. It's not Gibbons fault Gus Chacin has tanked out and Ricciardi decided to pay a career .500 pitcher 10 million/season (Burnett). Gibbons is doing fine with what he has to work with.. what would anyone else do differently? Last season Wells fought injuries that sapped his production, as did Halladay, Glaus and Overbay. If the same thing happens this year, the Jays will finish no higher than 3rd again... doesn't matter if they hire Sparky Anderson.

The Jays have a good squad & Fantastic pitching.
If injuries happen again to them, especially to their pitchers. They're done.
- but it's not HIS fault-
He will not be fired so quickly

What about Leland? 0-7? The Tigers are already sucking hind-t*t. Talk about managing a team into the ground!

April 9, 2008  02:03 PM ET

Willie Randolph should be fired before Gibbons.

Nobody has a bigger bubblehead on the block right now than Bruce Bochy out in SF. That team is pathetic and an optimistic upside is unspinnable.

April 9, 2008  03:22 PM ET

Randolph (Mets), Leyland (Tigers) should also be on the hot seat. If the mets aren't in first place in their division by the all-star break he should be fired.

April 9, 2008  04:39 PM ET

Come on guys. We're barely over a week into the new season and we're talkig about who will be the first to get fired?

April 9, 2008  04:56 PM ET

Terry Francona !!! LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL .

April 9, 2008  05:56 PM ET

bring back the dude with the bogus Vietnam stories to fire up the troops

April 9, 2008  06:40 PM ET

Randolph is by far the worse mgr in the national league, with his payroll and talent he should run away with the division. What would he do with the Marlins and their 25 million dollar payroll. The Mets should make a change if he doesn't get things going in the right direction.

April 9, 2008  09:34 PM ET

Boys and girls, you can't fire 25 underachieving players, so the manager pays the price.

Bye, John.

I didn't even know Toronto had a baseball team.

Guillen is the first one to go

That one guy who wears a Pirate logo on his head should be the first one to go.
