Dolphins focus on Long, Gholston

Apparently content to keep the No. 1 overall pick, the Dolphins have begun discussing contract parameters with at least two players on their short list of candidates to become the draft's top selection. Official contract negotiations with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long, and Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston were started this week, according to a source. Coincidentally, Long and Gholston are represented by the same agency, CAA, but have different agents

This guy will be a premier lineman in the NFL.

We'll know who Miami is drafting well before the draft. The agent of the player in question will blab.

April 10, 2008  07:15 AM ET

He has the potential to become a premier lineman. One thing is for sure is that Jake will give it his best shot and won't quit. Hopefully he'll have another shot to get back at hGholston and squash him in a pro game.

One problem with Long is that goofy razor tatt he has. That's my only criticism.

April 10, 2008  07:22 AM ET

He is good, but not better than Joe Thomas. The spot that the Dolphins are in, it makes the most sense. Why? Because they already have OLB Jason Taylor as well as OLB Joey Porter. I know they are getting up there in age, but drafting OLB/DE Chris Long with the No. 1 Overall pick....Is a little crazy.

LT's are a Key Factor on any Playoff team. You have to have a Solid LT to get you anywhere in this league. Jake Long would allow Vernon Carey to move back to RT, and with OG Smiley and C Satele.........That O-Line is starting to do some things.

I am sorry but Chris Long is overrated. Vernon Gholston is stronger, faster, and way more athletic. Gholston has produced the last two seasons against WAY better offensive lines than Long has. Long faced North Carolina, Wyoming, Duke, Middle Tenn St., Maryland,.........I mean c'mon he is supposed to dominate those games.

Against Premier talent Chris Long won't do as well.

hGholston also has "science" on his side...

April 10, 2008  07:25 AM ET

Gholston is a beast, even Michigan fans have to say so.

April 10, 2008  08:22 AM ET

"Apparently content to keep the No. 1 overall pick....."

Or apparently no one wants to trade for the No. 1 pick

April 10, 2008  08:28 AM ET

I disagree with Chris Long being overrated. He will not disappoint. You cant blame the boy for his school's schedule. Take a look around the league today and you see major talent and all-stars from small schools....your logic dosnt stand up.

April 10, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Finally a smart move out of Dolphins camp. None of these guys are far and away better then the rest. Negotiate with all that you are interested in and see who you can get signed for the most reasonable number.

Seriously....hGholston? Does someone have sour grapes? Oh Michigan fans....how you entertain me.

Jake Long is going to be good. The Dolphins had to choose someone and he is the safest way to go.

The Warden does not speak for all Michigan fans. I am a Michigan fan and a Jet fan and I would be thrilled if Gholston is part of Gang Green next season.

America's Legend

What school did Jason Taylor play at? Oh, a little school called Akron. Chris Long stil played in the "power" conference at Virginia in the ACC. Although, the conference has seemed pretty weak as late. Chris Long may not be the athletically gifted DE in this draft, but he suits the 3-4 which Parcells wants to eventually switch to; and he's a high motor guy, who will lead by example. It's rare to find player's with his type of work ethic, toughness, and pedigree. He might not put up big numbers, but he'll raise the intensity of that defense, much like Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor did with their relentless type of playing style; which Long shares.

Is he a number 1 pick? Not in my eyes. Neither is anyone else in this draft worth the type of money that they guarantee, without proving a thing. Joe Thomas was the #3 pick last year, and that contract made him the highest paid lineman in the league. He makes close to a million more per season than the next highest paid player. What if he fell flat, and became the next Robert Gallery? Luckily Thomas turned out to be a stud, but the Brown also revamped their offensive line over the past couple years signing LaCharles Bentley (I know he's been a nonfactor due to injury, but it shows they made moves to get better on the line) and Eric Steinbech. Plus they signed Lewis to solidify the ground game and had Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, JoJo, that team was stacked offensively and helped contribute to the rise of Derek Anderson. Don't think that the addition of Joe Thomas was the sole reason for that team's miraculous turn around. With that said, Jake Long isn't even worth that type of money, yet.

This draft class is so weak, Matt Ryan is a top 5 prospect, when in any other draft, he would be in the 3rd round or beyond. To think that fool gets top 5 money, and will likely make more or around the same money as Brady, both Mannings, and every other "elite" QB in the league without proving himself at all. To be continued....
