Bears, Harris break off contract talks

There were no fireworks when contract talks between Drew Rosenhaus and the Bears broke off Wednesday. Just because they didn't reach a new deal for defensive tackle Tommie Harris doesn't mean it's not a possibility, as well as a priority for the Bears. It just might take some time. Extensions for players under contract are always a delicate issue.

Is there any current NFL players not represented by Drew Rosenhaus?

April 10, 2008  09:13 AM ET

Chris Henry....

April 10, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Don't think Chris Henry qualifies as a current NFL player?

April 10, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Maybe Drew's too busy negotiating with his other clients to worry about Tommie Harris.

Then the answer to your question Cowboy Dave is, No.

Perhaps Rosenhaus should be the next executive director of the NFLPA. He seems to represent as many players as the union.

Nah, probably wouldn't want to take the pay cut.

And on top of that, he'd have Stover to deal with.....the kicker...

Memo to Ted Phillips + Co.: He's your best player. Pay up.

Scary!

April 10, 2008  10:35 AM ET

oh trust me Harris is gonna get paid...he's probably going to get a very very very rich deal indeed...he'll probably end up the richest DT in the league knowing the market these days...probably for 6-7 years too...when we have major talent we keep it for a long time....

p.s. harris you might wanna watch the urlacher saga because he wanted that big deal after HIS rookie contract too...just so happens he's already sick of it 3 years into it...so heres the page you should take out of this...DONT sign a major long term deal if you KNOW ur gonna want more later

April 10, 2008  10:35 AM ET

or why dont these people structure it that way so it exponentially gets larger as the years go on if you really think ur aging like fine wine!

April 10, 2008  10:44 AM ET

you have to structure NFL contracts front-loaded with signing bonuses to get guaranteed money or as soon as your production goes down you get cut/asked to restructure.

April 10, 2008  11:23 AM ET

The Bears hold all the cards right now because they can place the franchise tag on him as soon as his contract is up.

April 10, 2008  12:18 PM ET

compared to other DT's in the league Harris def deserves to be one of the top payed.... the thing that gets me is how large these salaries are getting.... if im the owners im getting together and deciding on an unofficial cap a player's contract can reach... btw rookie contracts need to be extremely lowered too.... sorry im a bears fan who is tired of these big babies complaining that $2 million a year is far too low (just threw that # out)... get a job out of the NFL workin 9-5 makin $25 an hour and i bet ull take anything to get back into the league

April 10, 2008  01:38 PM ET

I'm pretty sure the owners are fine with the figures for players' salaries. Just imagine if there was the guaranteed money like MLB/NBA.

Don't cry for the owners and don't blame great players for getting paid. I would like to get out in front of a possible franchise tag too if I was Tommie.

April 10, 2008  04:32 PM ET

Drew is trying to get his pockets fatter and that is why this deal isn't done yet! Can you imagine how rich this guy is off his 28 clients!

April 10, 2008  05:45 PM ET

What's the deal with Chicago? I understand not caving to guys like Grossman, or Bensen and handing out big deals, but they seem to be p*ssing off the guys that actually DO make plays. Briggs was unhappy. Urlacher is unhappy. Tommie Harris is unhappy. Those are probably the three best players that they have (Urlacher's injuries notwithstanding).

April 10, 2008  06:32 PM ET

As a Viking fan, the look on Tommie Harris's face scares the bejeebers out of me.

April 10, 2008  06:37 PM ET

Tommie is great, he just needs to stay healthy to plug up that line.

The Bears are **** on Harris by offering to make him the highest paid DT in the league?
Briggs is so pissed off that he signed a long term deal with the Bears making him one of the highest paid LBs in the league?
The Bears pissed off Urlacher by giving him a huge contract that made him ..... you guessed it. One of the highest paid LBs in the league?

Sounds like some people never bother to actually look up a single fact before talking caca.

The Bears paid a lot of money to Muhsin Muhammad and when he did not live up to it they cut him. That is just smart football. I hope they do the same thing with Cedric Benson.
