Goose: Leave Joba in bullpen

The Yankees still intend to make Joba Chamberlain into a starter this season, although no one seems to be sure just when or exactly how that change will happen. That lack of certainty strikes Goose Gossage as a bad idea. The former Yankee has said since Chamberlain came up last year that the Yankees should keep him in his current relief role, but Gossage is even more concerned about the lack of a clear future for the hard-throwing right-hander. "You can't be successful when you're being jerked around," Gossage said. "It's either one or the other. Just leave him alone." And the choice, at least to Gossage, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer, is clear. "I don't think there's any question he's better off in the bullpen," Gossage said. "How are you going to replace that guy?"

The Yankees won't make the playoffs so it doesn't matter.

How many Yankees are there taking 'roids this year?

Where's Roger "Rocket" Clemens? Did he make the roster this year?

It must be embarrassing being a Yankee fan.....you know, with the losing and steroids thing.

Must be embarrassing being Broadhead...you know, with all the worn-out jokes and nobody laughing. Seventh grade is hard enough as is.

How many Yankees are there taking 'roids this year? Broadhead

As many as or comparable to any team you can think of. Broad head comments are like overcooked noodles, beat and weak.

April 10, 2008  07:28 AM ET

the losing? That's funny stuff. Unless some one else steps up and can handle the 8th inning, they should keep him there this year and let him be a starter next year. No matter how much **** some people want to talk, with Joba and Mo it's a 7 inning game. Once the bats wake up, this is going to be a tough team to beat, and if you think the bats won't wake up you don't know baseball.

April 10, 2008  08:18 AM ET

Hey Goose!

Don't you think you might want to talk to Joba before you seal his fate?

You know, he just might want to collect starters pay instead of set up guy pay....

April 10, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Gonzalez was hitting last night.

April 10, 2008  09:48 AM ET

How are the Yankees "jerking him around?" He came up as a reliever, continues to be a reliever, and is being considered as returning to his previous starting role. Which is exactly what they've talked about since he came up.

Goose must've finally dipped his hand into the cookie jar now that he's in the HOF, and having his 'roid rage in his old age.

April 10, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Damn. The Yankees lost again?!

Come on, guys. We really need to stop playing around and letting Baltimore and Toronto pretend to be good.

April 10, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Also, something is wrong with this box score.

http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=280409107

It says Kennedy only throw 52 pitches over 3 innings while giving up two ER, but the Royals didn't score until the 5th.

What happened?

April 10, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Girardi saw it was raining and he experimented, probably something he learned in Florida, with all the rain.
He started a reliever for two innings, sent in another reliever for an inning or two and then farnsworth gave up a run, or two in his inning, which was the 5th innining and not the seventh as would have been usual.
It rained all game, but despite that the game was not delayed or called. So Kennedy came in and pitched the last 3 or so innings.

April 10, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Well, ain't that somethin...I must say, I don't really understand it.

April 10, 2008  10:17 AM ET

If Girardi wasn't going to start Kennedy then Kennedy should not have pitched at all last night. I agree I do not understnad Girardi's logic here.
But regarding Joba: He has the potential to be the best closer ever, far surpassing anything Goose in his heyday could do. Joba, in my opinion, is a throw back to when closers were really closers and really saved games when the games were on the line and pitched two innings a game if the need be. Not that he needs to do that all the time but he has that capability. Also, Joba's heater will be better used for an iining or so than over the course of a seven inning stint. Think any batter out there wants to face 95 to100 mph heat and then that nice slow offspeed stuff? Makes your knees get all wobbly and jelly like :)

April 10, 2008  10:18 AM ET

I think he was thinking that if the game was delayed he could bring Kennedy out after the delay and not waste him on only an inning or two, or, he was thinking that if the game was canceled or stopped he could save his rotation. Clearly I am not sure what he was thinking exactly either, there is no "Girardi Report" after every game like Torre used to do. But I liked it. it was an attempt at something that you never would have seen Torre do. Several games before two guys bunted, in a row! i was loving it, given it was in a good situation for it.

I argree with a Hall-of-Famer! I too say leave Jobe where he is. If it isn't broken, why fix it? Joba is dominating, just like Pap is in Boston, so why remove him from that roll?
LEAVE JOBA WHERE HE IS!!
