NFL injury rate highest among leagues

A 144-page report released by the Congressional Research Service on Wednesday echoes what retired football players have been saying for years: The disability plan run by the NFL and its players union is broken and requires a major overhaul. The report also says that the injury rate for NFL players was nearly eight times higher than that of any other pro sports league. Despite the dangerous nature of the game, neither the NFL nor the Players Association maintains data on the number of players forced into retirement because of injuries.

Then you wonder why the players want to play smash and grab.

It's news for all those people who complain when the players want more money.

This is why.

The NFL won't take care of you if you're disabled, and you're 8 times more likely to be injured than in any other sport.

Is it any wonder they take HGH or other substances to aid in recovery?

April 10, 2008  07:14 AM ET

Do you seriously believe that they take HGH and "other substances" to aid in recovery?

Anyway, players deserve what they can command from owners regardless of injuries. They have a player's union, but a lousy disability plan. Sounds like they need better management of the player's union.

I would think it would be to aid in recovery. Sure roids can make you bigger and stronger, but you still have to have talent in order to execute.

Look at a guy like Barry Bonds. He was hitting homers long before he started juicing. I think he did it to increase recovery time, and so he wouldn't be injured as frequently.

You know if Griffey had been taking something, he'd be the HR King right now. But Griffey is way too much of a gentleman to do so.

Jeewizz, I would have never guessed that the NFL would have the highest injury rate.....Thanks for the useful info......

"Despite the dangerous nature of the game, neither the NFL nor the Players Association maintains data on the number of players forced into retirement because of injuries."

Don't want to provide evidence for a class action lawsuit is the likely reason.

I waited and waited.

Nobody mentioned cowboy sports like bull riding.

They are men!!

April 10, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Bull Riding aint no sport, its a way of life.....

April 10, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Remember the bull riding in the days of old? No protective gear at all. Those were men!

So it's not tennis or golf?

April 10, 2008  10:41 AM ET

I'd say getting drunk in Minnisota wearing a horrible rug is by far and away the tuffest sport...

April 10, 2008  04:31 PM ET

This is the most physical sport and they need to do something, it will all be better when they get rid of Upshaw!

April 10, 2008  05:09 PM ET

Here we go National Health Care for the NFL, right get rid of Upshaw!

April 10, 2008  05:18 PM ET

....because that data would reinforce how flawed their current system is. Duh.

April 10, 2008  06:19 PM ET

How come they just don't take half of there signing bonus and put it up for Retiremient. It's more than the average American will ever see.
Hold that money for ten years after retirement.Easy.

April 10, 2008  06:28 PM ET

I like it like that!!!!!

April 10, 2008  06:29 PM ET

When was it that all of a sudden NFL players "didn't" know the risks they were taking ??? A disability clause for all players should have been in effect a long time ago. All parties involve - the owners, television, and Gene Upshaw should have had some type of compensation in effect for current and past players. The PAST PLAYERS MADE THE NFL AS POPULAR AS IT IS AND THEY SHOULD BE COMPENSATED FIRST !!!

Considering that this is the only true contact sport is this surprising? Every year yu marvel at guys that are faster, bigger and stronger. Well Faster, Bigger , and Stronger colliding with another object = greater chance of injury. Maybe if everyone got out of eachothers way we could reduce this stat.
