Trent Johnson, who led Stanford to a 28-8 record and a berth in the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament this season, will be named the new head coach at LSU at a press conference Thursday, according to several sources. One possible candidate to succeed Johnson at Stanford is Doug Oliver, a longtime Stanford assistant and former head coach at Idaho State who took over for Johnson when Johnson was ejected in the first half of the Cardinal's second-round NCAA victory over Marquette.

I wonder if Mike Montgomery is upset right now. If he just waited a week, he might have gone back to Stanford instead of taking the Cal job.

Good Point! I thought the same thing when Cam Cameron left the Chargers right before they dismissed Marty. DIfferent but there are similarities.

And if the lopez twins stayed, would he have gone?

J. HOVA that's so ironic I didn't even think of that. Stanford picks their basketball coaches well they'll be alright.

nothin stopping Monty from talking to Stanford to see if he can get something worked out with them...then pulling out of the Cal deal

nothing at all

why would he leave stanford for lsu?

April 10, 2008  01:01 PM ET

Why would he leave Stanford for LSU???... The question is... Why would LSU hire him???... Granted he is a good coach... But he isn't going to get anyone over the hump and be one of the elite programs in the country... The friggin guy got kicked out... OF AN NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME... If you can't lead your team then... And keep your cool... You have some serious problems

Man, I wish Stanford would take him back. Maybe CAL can trade him to the Cardinal - in exchange for their lost INTELLIGENCE. (What a retrograde choice.)

George: As soon as I saw the breaking news on ESPN last night, that was the first thing that jumped into my mind. I am sure in the back of Montgomery's mind he is thinking about it.

Having lived for 11 years in New Orleans, having a brother who lives in Baton Rouge, and having observed that LSU has a terrible basketball fan base, I must echo MARINsur4:

"Why would he leave stanford for lsu"?

So yeah: Boolah-boolah to Trent Johnson. He gets big bucks, but he has to live in Baton Rouge for at least part of the year. At least he'll have lots of money to gamble away at Catfish Town....

Definitely not. He would have stayed and Stanford would be a preseason favorite to win it all net year.

I don't buy into Pac-10 basketball as much as the media embarrassingly does (no Pac-10 team has won a national title since 1997 Arizona squad), but I thought Stanford was at least a contender. I wonder if he purposely got T'd-up twice so he could see if his assistant was ready to be his successor. After that game (the Lopez game-winner), he kept saying how the team played better while he was in the locker room......????

Here's the thing: He put together more than a few 22+ victory seasons at Stanford with players that obviously had to have been great students in high school AND have to handle the academic rigors once enrolled at Stanford..uh..you don't think it he can get great players to handle the LSU rigors or prerequisites?

It is all about the money. Why leave a good program in an elite conference in a nice city to go to another one and have to rebuild? Money is the only reason. I think it was a little crappy the way he did it too. Everyone knew that Mike Montgomery was hanging around waiting for an opportunity to get back into the college ranks, preferrably with a west coast team. Heck, he was hanging out at Stanford games this year like Wooden does for UCLA. If Johnson knew he was talking to LSU, why not drop a hint to Montgomery to wait a week and not jump at the Cal job? If I were Mike, i would be a little P.O.ed.

MarinSun4, why did he leave Stanford for LSU???? Why does ANYONE take a coaching job in the SEC???

Hint: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Same reason the players also go to that conference.
