How long will Lowell be out?

The Red Sox could be without Mike Lowell for tonight or longer after the third baseman was forced out of last night's 7-2 loss to the Tigers with a sprained left thumb. Lowell suffered the injury making a diving, backhanded stab of Ivan Rodriguez' game-opening grounder down the third base line. He threw Rodriguez out from his knees and remained in the game before being replaced by pinch-hitter Sean Casey in the bottom of the second. X-rays were negative, but Lowell, who left Fenway Park [map] in a splint, said he could feel his hand "separate" when he rolled onto it. Lowell said that he has no intention of going on the disabled list, but manager Terry Francona made it clear he was not going to put his third baseman back in the lineup too early.

Sean Casey is a good contact hitter, and solid first basemen, so no worries.

Not to mention one of the classiest guys in the game. Detroit will miss him!

i agree, whalers, good comment,. he obvisouly dove to his right, made a great play, got up, instantly winced, shook his wrist, initially stayed in the game, then came out an inning or so later, and may miss a few games of a 162 game season because he just signed a big contract. that makes perfect sense. good comment.

Hey Mike, Keith Hernandez & Walt Clyde Frazier would like to know if you could do a commercial with them.

The Sox must have had a prmonition when picking up Casey over the offseason. Youkaliptis can play 3rd and Casey is a proven 1b. He's a good stick and good clubhouse guy so they should be in good shape. Only downside is that he's slower than molasses in January.

it is odd that these things happen right after a big contract is signed......i think the official term is "Pavanoed" or "Hamptoned". The MLBPA is working feverishly to settle on the name.

Who cares the man has done nothing to contribute this year. 0 RBI's 0 HR's and 1 run

April 10, 2008  12:45 PM ET

they've played 9 games. its called a slump or slow start - something all ball players are subject to. Lowell is a good defensive 3B as well - as you can see by that play he made last night.

many a player has had a huge april only to do nothing the rest of the year. have you ever heard of chris shelton? he had 9 HRs in the first 13 games of '06 and it was downhill from there. If he didn't get sent to the minors that same year, he was there shortly thereafter.
