Drivers demand drug testing

The revelations by former NASCAR Craftsman Truck series driver Aaron Fike to ESPN The Magazine this week that he competed in races while under the influence of heroin ignited a firestorm of concern from NASCAR drivers on Thursday. Several drivers, led by a very outspoken Kevin Harvick - who once employed Fike as a driver in the Nationwide Series - called for NASCAR to adopt a random testing policy. NASCAR's current policy provides for testing for "reasonable suspicion." "I had a long conversation with NASCAR the last time we had this policy brought up in the end of the year last year and it almost seems like it went on deaf ears," said Harvick. "I'm disappointed with the fact that we're in a case where we have to have a reaction instead of being proactive about the situation. "To me, it was just kind of one of those meetings where they were content to listen to what I had to say and that was about it. My name is not Jeff Gordon." Other drivers chimed in as well.

Thought your name was Mr. Snot Nose. Unfortunately he is somewhat right this time. I still think Fick was an aberation.

April 11, 2008  07:53 AM ET

It's just idiotic for NASCAR to NOT randomly test. I highly doubt that they'll find anything, but at least they can say legitimately "We're Clean".

April 11, 2008  08:01 AM ET

NASCAR should drug check every driver every month! As Trainwreck said, then they could say 100% that NASCAR is clean!

April 11, 2008  08:28 AM ET

thought you had to be part crazy to drive trucks or cars that fast....turns out you just need to be high.

April 11, 2008  08:30 AM ET

I'm just shocked that there isn't a policy. After the Tim Richmond situation and now Fick. This isn't like baseball or football where if one guy is doing it, then it only really affects him. With 43 cars on the track doing over 190mph and one guy off due to drug or alcohol use could injure, or worse kill, several people. NASCAR needs to do something now.

April 11, 2008  08:33 AM ET

Like i said yesterday ... they check the cars after the race ... they need all the drivers after each race to have a drug test.

April 11, 2008  08:39 AM ET

Why not have drug tests? Almost every other sport has one. Its just good that Mr. Fike didn't kill anyone with his retarded decision. He may be an aberration ,but WHY take the chance?

April 11, 2008  09:16 AM ET

ClintDFW...why do the drug test after the race? Then it may be too late. They need to be tested before.

April 11, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Good for the drivers. They should demand drug tests. They already are in a dangerous occupation and the last thing they need out there with them is a driver (like Fike) high out of his mind driving a killing machine at 200 miles per hour.

April 11, 2008  09:18 AM ET

I think drug testing after a race would be too late if someone was high. It needs to be before to be most effective.

April 11, 2008  09:28 AM ET

I'll be honest here. I've done drugs, not as hard core as heroin or coke but it blows my mind that the crew helping drivers strap into their cars and walking around with them before the race that no one could detect that Fick or any other driver for that matter could be high getting in a car. When I used, my friends could tell the minute I walked through the door what condition I was in. No crew member could tell? That's almost as scary a fact as him being high on the track!

April 11, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Tribe....Very good point there.

April 11, 2008  09:46 AM ET

By the God it's about time ALL the drivers stuck togather
on this one = it will save somebodys life I"LL bet
(((good for our 4 wheeled hero's)))

April 11, 2008  09:53 AM ET

I have known heroin users and was unable to tell they were users. I thought I could tell when someone was high too but it is not that easy . This was a person I thought I knew well.

April 11, 2008  10:07 AM ET

joefordnproud === I know what you mean - my son was a user
and I didn't know at all until he was arrested for it = pretty sad
crap isn't it??

Tribe - we are not going to be your counselors in here.....lol
I think its fairly easy to recognize coke users...grinding teeth, up all night, disappears to do a line often, no appetite or loss of weight, often runs to the ATM etc........I guess Herion is more laid back. To me POT is no different than alchohal.....legalize and tax it.

April 11, 2008  10:36 AM ET

I'll agree I've never seen a heroin user before but isn't it a halucigen(sp). Got to be freaky driving that way if it is. As for Pot, Ironically enough after doing it for so many years I then joined the Coast Guard. And I have to agree with you Jackman. You can buy cigarettes, and the govt. taxes the crap out of it. You can buy alcohol and the govt. gets its cash off of it as well. But don't you dare grow a plant in your own back yard or in your house that has the same affect of the two put together. How moronic is that. Guys that were running drugs in the ocean had faster boats and better radar equipment than we had. Hell, they knew where we were before we even arrived there.
