Rams worried Long will be gone

When reports first surfaced that the Dolphins were negotiating with Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long, there must have been at least some hand-wringing at Rams Park. Why? Because there has been increasing speculation that Long is the Rams' preferred candidate at No. 2 overall in the NFL draft April 26. The Dolphins have the No. 1 pick. Barring a trade down in the first round, the Rams seem to be zeroing in on four candidates at the No. 2 spot: Long, Vernon Gholston, Virginia defensive end Chris Long and Louisiana State defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey.

Trade up if you want him that badly.

No doubt! And from what we're all reading, the Dolphin seem to itching to move out of that spot. Give the 2nd and a later round pick and they might do it. Then you get your guy and we don't have to deal with your whinning...

I'm a Dolphins and a Rams fan (Phins Phirst), I would love to see the Rams swap picks and give us Issac Bruce or Tory Holt. What a pickup that would be. We'd of course have to throw in another pick or something for those guys, but we need some leadership on offense, bad. Who better than a future hall of famer (both are) with at least three or four #1 or #2 WR years left in em? I'm tellin you Tuna, that should be your move.

Who else do the Phins have lining up at WR? Ted Ginn? Are you kidding me? I love you Teddy, youi're a great PR and all, but you still got a long way to go as a #1 WR.

But, thinking from another angle, Long fits one of our needs. So we'd be straight to keep him anyway. Depends on how bad the Rams want him.

The Rams had a BEAST at tackle for 10 years-
I feel no sympathy that they won't be getting another one.

Dolphins should keep the pick & take Long. Unlike a QB or RB, they won't have to pay him 1/2 a billion dollars to show up at camp.

jgb pegged it.....Rams know LT was where their bread was buttered the last 10 years thanks to Pace. They know that settling for the next best Tackle doesn't cut it. Unless they come up with a really nice trade package the Phins are better off keeping the pick and drafting Long.

If they did switch.. say gave Miami their 2nd rounder and a player then the Phins could draft Ghoulston and have one hell of a second round drafting OT, QB, CB or WR.

orlando fc....if your a rams fan u should know isaac bruce is no longer a ram..hes a 49er

April 11, 2008  12:40 PM ET

The Patriots have the number seven pick. The Patriots taped the SB 26 walk through. The Rams went up and down the field like the Patriots had no defense until the Red Zone where the limited play options and faster reads (if you mastered the other side's plays) could really help even a weaker defense. The Rams need a top pick. Just musing.

April 11, 2008  12:44 PM ET

Yeah they should he will be Long gone. Miami is taking him first.

April 11, 2008  01:04 PM ET

fins dont want this guy...this is all a smokescreen

April 11, 2008  01:14 PM ET

Orlando FC: Bruce is already gone (as browardcane mentioned), he signed with the 49ers as a free agent and there's no way in hell Holt is going anywhere, or Bulger will have noone to throw to.

I really like Jake Long and all, but considering our glaring need at DE (Leonard Little is 34 and James Hall was let go) and with both Gholston and Chris Long in this draft, I'm not sure we should pick him even if he's available at nr 2, so actually trading up to get him? No freaking way.

Pace is working hard to come back from shoulder surgery and could still be good for a few more years of service with any luck, so no reason to panic just yet.

April 11, 2008  01:20 PM ET

I'm with Browardcane, just a smokescreen. Parcells has too many needs to address with a team that's only talent has been on a dancing show (Jason wtf). Parcell's is also too old to spend time on a rebuild project and will do the same thing with this pick that he did in New England.

April 11, 2008  01:27 PM ET

Everyone also keeps saying that Parcells is no longer a coach but he can still build a winning team.

April 11, 2008  03:32 PM ET

*Im with Hozze here...the Rams have too many glaring needs on def line so they have an option to go either way...The Dolphins are just fishing the pick and seeing if they can get anytype of bite..they wont. No ONE wants that pick! unless they need a runningback really badly..McFadden would be the only reason to want to be up there.

**The Fin's will eventually get one of the Longs and the rams will get the scraps! and really good scraps.. Oh, and Parcells can be an even better Prez of Football Ops than a coach..he built Dallas up to its present shining...so i believe in him as a Prez..more so than a coach..

April 11, 2008  04:03 PM ET

it seems there getting a rise outta the rams..trade down and pick up a 3rd or 4th maybe..that would be nice

April 11, 2008  04:07 PM ET

Hozze, the Rams resigned James Hall about a week ago. So both of them are back, but I'm thinking that Hall will end up being depth or a 3rd down end behind Long. That is, if we don't get Jake Long...

April 11, 2008  04:23 PM ET

The Rams are just saying that Jake Long is the player they covet. But I think it's just a ploy to get another team to trade up for him. They'd gladly trade down if they could.

April 11, 2008  04:32 PM ET

The Rams have more needs than just the offensive line. If Long is taken by the Dolphins then just take Chris Long or Vernon Gholston, either of whom should be an upgrade to a lousy pass rush.

Ask Tom Brady about the Giants front 4... defense wins chamionships so stay where your at and be happy if Chris Long falls to you
