The Mets' patience with the fluctuating health of Orlando Hernandez finally ran out yesterday and the team is on the verge of signing Claudio Vargas to a minor-league contract to help fill the void, the pitcher's agent confirmed last night. Bean Stringfellow, who represents Vargas, said that general manager Omar Minaya contacted him yesterday afternoon and his client would pick a team by today.

I think they would be better off signing Fernando Vargas. At least he could help beat up the phillies.

El Duque looks like he is taking a nap mid-windup. It must be tough pitching into your late 50's

The Yanks should've never let El Duque go. He was the man.

Vargas had a great spring and was surprisingly let go by the Brewers. His salary is virtually peanuts and he's got a huge upside, so why not? Working with Rick Peterson and pitching in a rotation with Johan Santana, he may just surprise everyone.

Vargas is signed and hopefully El Duque is done for. Maybe we can trade him back to the Yanks for some Cuban Cigars.

Are El Duque's trips to the DL covered by Medicare?

April 11, 2008  01:03 PM ET

I hope they got him one of those MEDIC ALERT things, in case he falls down in the bullpen

April 11, 2008  01:36 PM ET

Bean Stringfellow! Now that's a funny name!

April 11, 2008  01:37 PM ET

So is Dash Riprock

April 11, 2008  05:54 PM ET

If you 're a Mets fan, you gotta like getting Santana. The rest of the rotation is pretty iffy, though.

YOU NEVER HAVE ENOUGH PITCHING - NEVER

el duque was the man in the 05 playoffs for chicago, yea he is like 72 years old but if they stick him in the bullpen they could squeeze a few more years out of his geriatric azs
