Scholarship for fastest UF student

Florida coach Urban Meyer is searching for the fastest student on campus. He's quite certain it's one of his football players -- Louis Murphy, Chris Rainey or Deonte Thompson. Just to be sure, he's having a race Saturday. What happens if someone beats his speedsters before the team's spring game? "They're on scholarship," Meyer said. It would be a long shot, especially after school officials held 40-yard dash time trials and didn't exactly find any real burners. Of the approximately 225 students who tried out, two covered the distance in 4.47 seconds, one ran a 4.48 and another was clocked at 4.49. The fastest 15 students advanced to the finals Saturday. They will be split into three groups of five. Murphy will race one group, Rainey another and Thompson a third. The players aren't exactly afraid of the competition.

They could have used them against that slow has been Michigan team last Jan. 1st. They might have made a difference and helped that strong UF team win the bowl game that they soundly got dismantled in where their heisman QB couldn't figure out how to convert a 3rd down into a 1st down.

GO BLUE!

Sounds like a college football reality show.

April 11, 2008  08:35 AM ET

The heisman QB had 4 td's in that game. it wasn't the offense' fault, it was the young and inexperienced defense. they will be a top 5 team and michigan will not even show up as a blip on the radar. sorry blue. you got another 2-3 years before you are even relevant again...

That's an interesting concept. I wonder if there is like one dude in the dorms who can run like a 4.2.

Imagine if some freshman who never played football a day in his life, but comes out running a 4.2 fourty yard dash. That would be an amazing story.

It kind of like a Footabll relality show ( props to D.SLIQ).

jaggedice20,

How did the FL D prevent the FL O from converting 3rd downs? Fl was 2 for 11 in 3rd down conversions. Tebow didn't complete a pass in 4 attempts on Fl's last possession. Fl was picked to dominate the game in their own backyard by EVERYONE, including me. I was scared going into that game. I had to change underwear a few times that day. I saved one pair cuz one stain looked like the Virgin Mary serving Jesus Jimmy Dean sausages for breakfast. I sold it on Ebay and made some nice change.

In fact, UM beating FL was like ASU beating UM. No one thought it could happen!

April 11, 2008  10:00 AM ET

Florida's defense and lack of running game is the reason they lost. Don't put it on Tebow. The offense still put up 35 points. You give up 373 yards passing, and over 150 on the ground, you should lose. Anyways, I think this is a good idea by Meyer. What does it hurt to find the fastest kid on campus? And with Florida's offense, you can always use speed. And that's one thing you can't teach...

What happened to Deonte Thompson? I read on a blog about a year ago that he ran a 4.28. Shoot, get him to race, then you wouldn't worry about a guy who can't play being on the team.

It's a good idea to make the spring game interactive, but it is not necessary in the south where football junkies will just be trying to get a fix anyways.

Meyer the spread-option specialist? No, Meyer the media specialist.

This is Hilarious, I hope some 5'8 chess club nerd clocks out like a 4.3 and make the team so UGA can tear his head off hahaha. No really though it would be pretty entertaining if some nobody comes out and beats these guys.

I liked this movie better when it was called "Rudy", although I'm pretty sure Sean Astin didn't run a 4.4

Yea and all the FB players run on it, haha so no luck there

The event by Meyer was created to add more excitement to the Orange and Blue Game and to give students a chance to "compete" against some of the atheletes. It was not intended to recruit the fastest player on campus. Its a great idea and Deonte thompson, Demps, Harvin (if healthy) would dust these guys.

Dawg: that would only happen in that cesspool called Athens. When UGA beats UF more than 3 times in 20 years, perhaps you can run your mouth. In the meantime, get back to your job at the McDonalds drive-through.

Nole Boy: see my comments to Dawg Boy. The Scuminoles will be pathetic again this year. I pray for good health for Lucifer Bowden so that he will stay forever at F$U.

would be nice for one of the players to ease up and give a kid a full ride
