Stanford coach speculation

Officially, Trent Johnson was named the new basketball coach at LSU on Thursday. Officially, Cal coach Mike Montgomery confirmed he will not be the next coach at Stanford. Unofficially, the three players who signed to come to Stanford next season are reassessing whether they should seek a release from their commitment. A lot of names are popping up, but everything is speculative. New Mexico coach Steve Alford was hired at Iowa by Bob Bowlsby, now Stanford's athletic director. But the three-year contract extension he signed last week has no buy-out clause, and Alford is making more than $1 million a year, which probably puts him out of Stanford's price range. St. Mary's coach Randy Bennett, San Diego coach Bill Grier and Nevada coach Mark Fox are the names being tossed about, with Bob Knight's name even getting a mention.

The St. Mary's or San Diego Coach should get the job.
