Bryant Gumbel resigned from the NFL Network on Friday after two seasons in which his skills as a play-by-play announcer did not match his talent as a studio host. In a brief e-mail message, Gumbel said, "I take comfort in knowing that I tried my best." Steve Bornstein, the network's president and chief executive, said in a statement: "We appreciate everything Bryant did in helping us launch our NFL Network game telecasts. Bryant helped create interest in our first foray into televising NFL regular-season games." Bornstein publicly supported Gumbel, even as Gumbel struggled with the mechanics of play-by-play. When reached by telephone, Bornstein declined to say if he had asked Gumbel to leave. In a second e-mail message, Gumbel said: "What happened is we had a conversation and we agreed to go in different directions. It's really as simple as that."

This guy was just plain awful.

Love the NFLN. Bryant GumBall, not so much. Didn't like Deon Sanders at first. Then Deon started to remember he played on the greatest team in NFL History (San Francisco 49ers). Then he was all good.

Gumbel truly sucked. On the other hand, he always has his "significant other" to go home to - his ego. (Never, repeat: never, did a man love himself so much on the basis of so little. Good riddance.)

George W. Watson ...If that was a motion, then I second it. All in favor?
