USC tailback Joe McKnight did not attend Saturday's scrimmage and will miss the final week of spring workouts because he is academically ineligible to participate, Coach Pete Carroll said. McKnight, a sophomore who is regarded as the Trojans' top multidimensional threat, dropped a class, leaving him without the required 12 units, Carroll said. The situation will not affect McKnight's eligibility for the fall, Carroll added.

Surprised...?

April 13, 2008  10:36 AM ET

why didn't someone, anyone, tell him he needed to maintain 12 units at all time? this is very strange. if you were a coach or AD, wouldn't you kinda like 'keep an eye' on your 'top multidimensional threat' and his academics? or do they just worry about keeping 'em out of jail down there in the land of the Trojan?

They need to pay these proffessors a bit better. They're starting to forget who bought the Benz.

April 13, 2008  11:38 AM ET

He dropped a class and made himself ineligible? Wow! Way to go USC coaching staff! Give that compliance officer a HUGE raise!

April 13, 2008  12:06 PM ET

if your eyes were in fact WIDE open you'd be able to read that this wouldn't affect his eligibility. Pull your head out, dude.

How can you fail Sports and Leisure?

April 13, 2008  12:13 PM ET

well KMAN, the article did say that he is currently INELIGIBLE to participate in the workouts. and you never know when a rocket scientist like McKnight will miss part of the regular season because of something like this. KMAN is blinded by Pete's man juice

Unfortunately we don't have staff designated to give answers to our student athletes; thus we avod needing to suspend 1/4 of the team and fire staff. Reading is required at USC the guy needs to know his requirements and ask question.

Please everyone knows academic advisers are usually incompetent, even for great football teams. I love my alma matter but I must admit that academic advise was not it's strong point.

or do they just worry about keeping 'em out of jail down there in the land of the Trojan?

Congratulations, a cynical attempt at a hackneyed joke.

April 13, 2008  12:53 PM ET

This is the one guy on the Trojan squad that scares me, here's hopin' he drops some more classes come fall.

April 13, 2008  12:58 PM ET

Dropping a class and missing the rest of spring football is better than getting a F in the class and becoming completely academically ineligible.

I wouldn't think an athlete's classes would be that hard to do, especially when you're a five-star recruit who goes to premier football school in America and your path is set for the NFL anyways.

April 13, 2008  01:41 PM ET

He'll be on the field when the season starts, so what is the deal?

April 13, 2008  02:13 PM ET

"I'm disappointed, but it was coming and he didn't take care of business in one particular class that got him," Carroll said after the Trojans' 88-play scrimmage. "To make sure that he's doing the right thing we had him drop the class to keep his grade-point average in order and all of that and that will keep him from having some other issues later on."

I'd like to know what class he had to drop. Maybe it was film & dance Southern Cal is well known for their film school.

April 13, 2008  02:47 PM ET

J hova is right he ll be on the field no questions. If USC and the NCAA are willing to sweep Reggie Bush receiving 100,000 in cash and a 300,000 house under the table one dropped class will not stop them now. USC can and does do what they want. It is what it is....

April 13, 2008  03:48 PM ET

Where in the world was the compliance office during all of this, let alone the football program's academic advisors?!?!?

April 13, 2008  05:54 PM ET

Ok here is how it works.... Seeing as it looks like 98% of you have no idea how this goes... He was having a tough time in a class... So to keep his GPA where it should be... And thus eligible for the SEASON...(as opposed to spring ball)... He dropped the class... And will make up the units he needs.... Sometime down the road... So all you jackhole's who think the kid is being lazy... Are way off base... Rest assured... He will be ready for the season... And seeing as he is going to be more widely used this year... Everyone on our schedule is screwed

April 13, 2008  06:26 PM ET

Nicely put. I can't wait til the slowest team in the nation comes to town on Sept. 13th.

April 13, 2008  06:32 PM ET

If McKnight is the ONLY player in U$C's squad that scares you, then you have ZERO idea of what is happening in CFB. This is a scary good team on all fronts.

And the move totally makes sense. Regardless of what class he was in (we can all assume it wasn't advanced physics), dropping it and being inelligible for spring is the right move, when the alternative is failing and missing season games. It's not big deal to drop a class you are doing poorly in to keep teh GPA up....pre-law and pre-med students do it all the time.

As a Bruin fan, I'm wishing they WEREN'T that smart and told him to stay in the class so he could miss real games.

April 13, 2008  08:27 PM ET

See now all Texas fans say how glad they are they didn't get ryan Perilloux now LSU fans can say how happy they are they didn't get Joe Mcknight.

wow, great lesson to teach a kid Pete. can't pass the class, just drop it. if a kid can't go to 4 classes and pass them all, they shouldn't be in college.
