Rodriguez's WVU tab growing?

The Charleston Daily Mail reports that the amount of money that U-M coach Rich Rodriguez potentially could be forced to pay West Virginia University is growing about $300 a day when interest is factored in. And if WVU gets its way in its legal battle with the coach, that sum could soar to $900 a day. In the end, the Michigan coach ultimately could owe WVU considerably more than the $4 million specified in the buyout clause in the contract that he had with WVU. Rodriguez and WVU currently are wrangling over the clause in Monongalia Circuit Court.

What I'm interested in is if UM (or its boosters) have some sort of deal in the works to pay this $$? That;s a lot of money and I doubt Rodriguez would have left without some assurances that he would not have to pay the buyout himself.

But onto the bigger issue in general, the NCAA should grow some and actually force coaches to honor their contracts, like student athletes. And if they leave early, the coach would need to sit out a year, just like a student transferring.

That's why there are buyout clauses???

Do you have to sit out a year when you switch jobs?

April 14, 2008  08:48 AM ET

The NCAA needs to review making students sit out a year. I think if a new coach and coaching staff are brought in, there should be different rules. If a coach comes in who runs a spread offense, and you're not a mobile QB, that's not fair you should have to suffer. As far as Rodriguez, he needs to just get this over with. Pay the money and move on. You signed the contract. Now be a man about it, and just pay.

Talk about burning your bridges before you leave.

April 14, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Why are there more PS fans than WVU in all of these stories? Just curious?

April 14, 2008  09:27 AM ET

I agree with PSULions. I'm a HUGE Michigan fan too, but the thing is this. Why does a coach get to recruit a player on his credentials then jet after a year or two, then when the player (like Ryan Mallet for instance) doesn't fit into the plans anymore he has to sit a year. I'm glad that they didn't make Mallet sit a year and overruled it. I get why he left, and honestly I get why WVU is pissed off. I agree, make him sit a year for not honoring his contract. It's no different then players doing it - actually, I take that back.. it's worse.

April 14, 2008  09:29 AM ET

Is it really the right way to fix the problem? Why not let players transfer without sitting out a year in those situations instead?

No I don't. But I don't recruit young men to my program who must commit or lose a year. The buyout doesn't discourage coaches from leaving if big programs/boosters actually pay it. And its these students that lose. Many choose a program based upon the coaching staff. If they abandon these young men, then they should have to sit out a year just like they would.

I don't; but there are some folks who do

It's called "non-compete clauses." I've seen it, (and seen it enforced) from everything from accounting to plumbing.

They make plumbers sit out? What is the world coming to...

April 14, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Actually I have a non-complete clause. I can not go to a direct competitor for 2 years.

April 14, 2008  10:20 AM ET

I say let RR & uofm worry about the money. This is exaclty what michigan needs during spring training. Stories about the head coach not being a man by trying to weasel out of a contract THAT HE SIGNED.

April 14, 2008  10:54 AM ET

oh well, just pay it move on and learn from it.

April 14, 2008  10:59 AM ET

Rich Rodriguez and his "F-Bomb" troop of coaches is such a huge drop in CLASS from Lloyd Carr. Hiring a man who breached his contract is like marrying someone who cheated on their spouse. Sooner or later, he'll bite them too.

April 14, 2008  11:18 AM ET

By the time this is all said and done, some UM fans will want Lloyd Carr back...that is until they play OSU again.

April 14, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Here's the deal. If RichRod loses in court, he'll be hit with the $4 million plus interest and he'll have to pay it. And hopefully the WVU whiners will thenn shut their toothless mouths and move on.

Take it from the TRUTH, UM's supporters will pony up on any pricetag Coach Rod has to pay. Right now, its just a pissin' contest.
