Questions surround UCF death

UCF football player Ereck Plancher showed signs of distress during an intense workout last month before he collapsed and later died, four of Plancher's teammates told the Orlando Sentinel. Plancher, a 19-year-old receiver from Naples, was taken to a hospital March 18 and was pronounced dead about an hour after the workout, known as a "mat drill." A preliminary autopsy was inconclusive. Further tests are under way to determine the cause of Plancher's death. The UCF players, who asked for anonymity because they fear retribution from football coaches, said Plancher's final practice was more intense than the basic-conditioning workout described by UCF officials. In an interview with the Sentinel, UCF coach George O'Leary and his football staff disputed the four players' account of Plancher's final practice. "I did not see him struggle on the field," O'Leary said of the morning Plancher died. "From my professional opinion, what should have been done for his care was being done."

This isn't going to turn out good I'm sure.

Anyone know what time of day they were practicing? I'm sure it's pretty dang hot down there around 2 oclock and if they were pushing them pretty hard they should have had trainers running around checking everyone. I hope this doesnt turn a couple of years ago where we had 3 or 4 guys die....

Heat plus humidity (Central Florida) can be dangerous.

They were in a indoor practice field, But yes it is still very hot. The article in the paper was even worse. Its stated how he was belittled in the team huddle for not hustling and was told he was not hustling and needed to pick up the pace..Um hello if he was slow or not doing as well as you thought, why dont you first ask him if hes ok before ripping him apart.

Cmon guys... This is a truely unfortunate ACCIDENT... Thats it. If anyone has ever played football before and NOT had a coach yell at them to "hustle up" at some point in the practice, they had a BAD COACH. Our coaches used to yell at us to hustle every chance they got. It was like they were waiting for it or somthing

they push guys to hard in practice in college...i played back in the day in college and take it way to far...i got to the point where i physically couldnt go another step and i just stopped..all the coaches were yelling but screw it,,not worth passing out or dying over

April 14, 2008  11:30 AM ET

And I agree with you on the Hustling and coaching, but in this case the signs were there, He could not catch his breath in the huddle, he had dropped to a knee, Ill put the article below for you to read. I just feel that the trainers were not exactly on top of this practice. If you read the article first and second page, It seems the coaches and trainers were not paying attention.

Sorry kept cutting off the link

Its better to be safe than sorry. Is there a reason to push a 19 year old kid past his limits in the middle of March? I understand you want to "toughen" these kids up, but there has to be a point where common sense wins out.

April 14, 2008  12:26 PM ET

May he RIP.

Bgarret-

The whole link is there even though you don't see it. Triple click and paste it on your browser and it all shows up. Strange but true.

Trainers are there to monitor these things, if the kid wasnt doing well they SHOULD have noticed...

College workouts are brutal, thats the point...to quote the late Woody Hayes "if were easy boys everyone would do it!"

This player literally gave his all and the coaches wanted more. The coaches should be banned from football if they are not able to tell the difference between someone holding back and someone working themself to death.

thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

these coaches have to learn when enough is enough..when i was playing my coach made me try to squat like 500 lbs..i was a 6'0 170lb WR..i tried because they were all yelling and screamin.i got a hernia, blew every blood vessel in my brain and missed all spring practice because of it

April 14, 2008  03:18 PM ET

A tragedy and my heart goes out to the family.

that being said: working out, pushing limits is part of practice. Do you think they should just practice once a week? Maybe NCAA should ban tackling and just move to flag football? Of course not. With 10's of thousands of young men pushing their limits, some are going to have undetectable health issues, unfortunately.

To make anything more of this "they were pushed too hard" is ludicrous.

Your quote should read: worked out to death, pushed livable limits is part of practice. Also, undetectable health issues? Did you not read the story. You obviously have an agenda, are you related to the coaching staff in any way?
