Jeter may make return tonight

Derek Jeter sat in his locker in the ultra cramped clubhouse at Fenway Park in the middle of yesterday afternoon, not knowing if the Yankees' medical staff would let him test his strained left quadricep by running in the chilly New England air. Less than hour before the first pitch of the finale of a three-game series between the Yankees and Red Sox, and after Jeter worked out harder than he did Saturday, he was talking about returning to the starting lineup tonight in St. Petersburg against the Rays.

While I like Jeter I am enjoying watching Gonzales cover for him.

damn it. We finally get a good fielding shortstop and then Jeter comes back, LOL

Now, I Wouldnt be surprised if Jeter is playing a new position by next year.

I like this kid Gonzalez, but they need Jeter back.

" Now, I Wouldnt be surprised if Jeter is playing a new position by next year. "

Seriously>?
-that is ridiculous-
Add up the # of games Jeter has WON for us vs. the amount of games he has lost for us while playing short - my guess it is a 10-1 ratio.

I like Gonzales- & agree he has looked GREAT- but it is over 5 games.
At best he will be good trade bait for us

Gonzalez did a good job -- the question[s] I have is[are], why doesn't Cano sacrifice bunt when Damon is on first with less than 2 outs? why don't the Yankees play smart baseball and hit behind runners? why do they not score when they have runners on 1st and 2nd, or 2nd and 3rd, with less than 2 outs? why won't Giambi hit to left when the shift is on? he's making millions, he ought to be able to hit to the opposite field? why or why would Girardi ever put Farnsworth on the mound ever again? how far do the Yankees think they can go winning only ever 5th game [Wang]?

April 14, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Girardi is calling bunt plays more than Torre did. There are some guys they just don't do it too often with. Cano is such a good hitter that they just don't call on him to bunt. Agreed maybe they should once in a while, but it is hard to argue with not taking the bat out of Cano's hands.

April 14, 2008  12:12 PM ET

AllStarz -- Cano hasn't hit the ball consistently all year ... has a .170 batting average ... worse with men on ... he should ALWAYS bunt, in my opinion ... all the Yankees should bunt when they have a chance to advance runners with less than 2 outs , even ARod -- one successful bunt is better than 4 K's and 0-5 ... fundamental baseball for a few months until the HR's and doubles start coming ...

April 14, 2008  12:38 PM ET

I am all for more bunting, and I think Girardi is too. Girardi called bunts twice in a row recently, something Torre never did. Cono is not batting consistently, but, there is a fine line between small ball and taking the bat out of a good hitters hands. I had no problem with it but i can see where an alternate approach could have been used. Strategy is always wrong when it doesn't work, and when it does work you are a genius, that's all I am saying.

So, you're probably talking about Jeter winning games with his BAT? How would that change if he switched to, say, 1B? Or if he had switched when to 2B when they originally got ARod?

All that guy was saying is that Jeter might be switching positions, not getting benched...

and you say HIS comment is ridiculous?

April 14, 2008  02:05 PM ET

Thanks Jim You know I know better now. And using Gonzales as trade bait turned my stomach. I am not interested in that at all. Keep him, as he is already 25 and ready to play very soon.

Should read

Or if he had switched to 2B when they originally got ARod?'

I'm not sure how much of an upgrade defensively it is for the Yankees to have Jeter back in place of Gonzalez. In terms of leadership and morale, you want Jeter back if you're a Yankee fan no doubt. But that kid made some defensive plays recently I'm not sure Jeter would have.

'But that kid made some defensive plays recently I'm not sure Jeter would have.'

Jeter wouldn't have....if anything, watching this kid play SS, if only temporarily, should cement the notion in Yanks fans' minds that Jeter's range is the worst in the game for starting SS...

What was it, pulled groin?

Can't be his scrotum, they didn't find one...

April 17, 2008  03:14 PM ET

ok so I have to admit it....

Jeter is clutch when the count is in his favor, espcially in a key game situation with guys on base...there...happpy now??
