Redman key to Falcons draft

On film, Chris Redman looked good as the Falcons starting quarterback over the final four games last season. New Falcons coach Mike Smith, and his overhauled coaching staff, will see Redman in person, beginning Monday at a three-day mini-camp. What they want to know is if Redman is good enough to be the starter again in the fall. whether Atlanta uses the No. 3 overall pick on a quarterback, like Boston College's Matt Ryan. Instead, they could address their offensive (Jake Long) or defensive (Glenn Dorsey) lines. The workouts won't be the sole criteria for player evaluation, especially for linemen who can't exhibit their physicality. However, they will matter.

If Jake Long or Glenn Dorsey aren't on the board, I would still take DT Sedrick Ellis over Matt Ryan. Sedrick Ellis would step in on day 1 and improve this team. The same can be said for the rest of the players mentioned.

Do not take Matt Ryan.

He is good enough to be the QB on the Falcons. They have gone through enough without working through the pains of an inexperienced QB..There are no saviors at that spot in this draft anyways.

I agree 50. A QB is a risk at any pick and you can find good ones in the 2nd round if needed. I would suspect Redman would play well if the OL improves to protect him and open lanes for the running game.

GIve DJ a chance!

If the falcons are smart, which i think Dimitroff is then they would go ahead and take Long or Dorsey. You cannot have a "franchise" quarterback without any protection. The next round they should address their needs at offensive line or defensive line, depending on whether they pick Dorsey or Long at No. 3. In the third they should take a CB to replace DeAngelo Hall. In the 4th surprise everyone and take QB Dennis Dixon, who was a Heisman candidate last season before being injured. Dixon is coming off of an injury but he still would be a great addition and if he doesn't work out, then its only a 4th round pick, not No. 3! Go Falcons

I think with Redman & Shockley in camp the Falcns can pick up Brohm or Falco in the 2nd round. Do something for the defense or the Offensive line

April 14, 2008  10:48 AM ET

The Falcons have tons of picks in the first 3 rounds. They should do a very good job in getting players that fit the new scheme. They have to get some guys on the Offensive line and Dline. It's a must.

The Falcons have 3 second round picks. I like Flacco.....plain and simple. Will Atlanta open it's arms to a White QB to be the future? That is my only question.

I don't think that's a legit question. If you start winning, no one cares what race you are.

April 14, 2008  10:52 AM ET

I agree... What kind of question was that?

It just seems as thought that it must be a black QB in Atlanta. Whoever it is, if they can play, play. I always see people talking about DJ.......then Dixon.......

I understand that you are a UGA fan, so you will say Shockley. I am not trying to be racist. I am simply asking the question.

April 14, 2008  11:00 AM ET

It's all about race at QB. Some owners will not draft Black QB's. Are you serious? That has always been an issue.

Why do so many people rip into McNabb? Why did so many people hate on Vick (Before he was in trouble)? Cunningham, Moon, Young, and McNair? I will be glad when another Black QB wins the Superbowl.

I didn't mean to get people all mad, but it just seems to be a little different in Atlanta about how they approach QB's since losing Vick.

April 14, 2008  11:05 AM ET

They've only lost Vick for a year. So they're probably still in shock from losing Vick to going to Chris Redman. If the Falcons bring in a QB who starts winning, that is all that matters. And I think people bring up Shockley and Dixon because they're used to a mobile QB being back there.

April 14, 2008  11:10 AM ET

I would like to see Vick back as a Falcon. I would like to see Redman hang on to the job until then. They can build a Great team around him will all of these draft picks and when he gets back........Playoff time.

The problem is that no one knows what Goddell will do when Vick gets back. Vick could lose another year due to a suspension. I really think the Falcons should fill all the other holes and wait until Vick gets back. But then again....Who knows what Vick will be like when he gets out......As a player.

April 14, 2008  11:13 AM ET

You can always hold out hope for an early Michael Vick release - LOL !!!

April 14, 2008  11:17 AM ET

I say Shockley because, of course, I am an UGA fan... But also, because I don't see why everyone is giving the job to Redman... Yes, he did ok running Petrino's system last year, but remember that is the only system he ever did well in, being that he played for Petrino in college, then came to the NFL, then got cut and sat at home until his old ball coach came calling... I don't want to see Joey in a Falcon's uniform ever again... I believe it will take at least one more year before the o-line is ready so we will need a somewhat mobile qb... Hence, give DJ a chance... If we draft Defense, this team will look a lot like Jacksonville... Mobile qb, 2 good rbs, no name receivers, and a stout defense (hopefully)

Who are the Falcons RBs now?

April 14, 2008  11:47 AM ET

I think DJ will get a good chance in training camp. I really think he could come out on top. I just hope he doesn't get hurt again.......and Roddy White gets better.

April 14, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Jerious Norwood (who averaged 6 ypc) and Michael Turner...
