Will Long go first, or drop in draft?

Jake Long is this year's example of how the mercurial nature of the NFL draft can make a prospect's status rise or fall like a wild trading day on the stock market. Not many weeks ago, Long was the top-rated offensive tackle in the April 26-27 draft, based on his performance in four years at Michigan. How times change -- and fast. With the draft starting in 12 days, Long might be the No. 1 prospect at any position. There have been reports out of Miami that the Dolphins, who have the first pick overall, have begun preliminary negotiations with Long's agent, Tom Condon, on the parameters of a contract. That doesn't guarantee Long will be the first pick, but it sends a strong signal about the Dolphins' intentions. They want their first pick signed before the draft. And there are other reports Dolphins still are considering drafting defensive lineman Chris Long of Virginia first.

I am happy about this as they seem a good family. Get players like this and avoid dealing with the Commish and the Cowboys looking for free talent when he gets out of jail. Some guy with great draft instincts showed me up in the McKelvin article posts a few pages back.

Jake Long will go No. 1 Overall.

As with all positions, an OT can be hit or miss. Do you take a leap of faith and throw the $15 million in guaranteed money at this guy who could be Joe Thomas or he could be Robert Gallery?

April 14, 2008  07:43 AM ET

I agree with the comment about OTs being hit or miss. You might get Orlando Pace, or you might get Robert Gallery.

The 1st pick is always a risk. But I think its smart to always have the 1st pick under contract before draft day. Crazy to spend all that money and not even have the guy show up on time.

He will go in the top ten. Heralded O-lineman generally have the lowest bust rate. They are good investments generally.

What a lame attempt by both SI and ESPN to manufacture drama for this draft. Long is going frist. There has been no suspense in Miami and true fans knew this all along. Smokescreens are created to generate suspense but cmon get real, Jake Long is the best pick. If for some reason my Phins lose too many brain cells and draft someone else then Long will go second because 2 teams will not make that mistake.

April 14, 2008  09:03 AM ET

How are they manufacturing drama? You don't know what Parcells is going to do. If I would have told you Mario Williams would be the #1 pick, you would have laughed at me. The Dolphins suck. If they don't get this pick right, they'll be picking #1 again next year.

April 14, 2008  09:43 AM ET

I'm thinking they may be picking 1st next year even if they do get this pick right!

April 14, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Parcells will totally redo the roster over the next 2-3 years. Jason Taylor will get treated just like Emmitt. He will be gone after next year.

I just really don't see a need for a 3-4 OLB to be picked No. 1 Overall. If he ran a 4.4 and broke sack records in college and played the 3-4 LB spot already, I could see. But to pick Chris Long would be stupid.

Jake Long will help the Dolphins out right this second and be a staple in that offense for years to come.

I am sick of hearing about the Dolphins plans - so I'm gonna say so-LONG !!!

April 14, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Funny Kaycee.......as are the Dolphin's hopes in 08

April 14, 2008  12:30 PM ET

It's a lot smarter drafting guys like either Long, rather than the typical crack-head, gang-banger, criminals that usually go early

April 14, 2008  12:52 PM ET

There have been great articles over the past few weeks re: the fact that the NFL draft is broken, with all the money going to top-5 picks who've proven nothing at the pro level, and how, historically, pick 1 fares little better than pick 31 in terms of Pro Bowls and HOF potential. If I'm Parcells, I tthrow Jimmy Johnson's "value chart" out the window and take what I can get for the first pick.

April 14, 2008  01:31 PM ET

Ya i dont think he'll be going first, but I guess we'll just have to see then wont we?

Good one - you could also advise them to go Long.

The Dolphins are doing the right thing by creating a buzz about taking OT Long #1 overall. With the Rams and Chiefs in desperate need for an OT, why not bluff as much as possible to see if one of those 2 teams are willing to give up their 2nd round pick to move up one spot (or two). As high as the Dolphins, Rams, and Chiefs 2nd round pick is...its basically the same as a late ast rounder and that would give Miami another good player.
