How can Rutgers replace Rice?

Mason Robinson isn't sure how Rutgers' scrutinized tailback competition will play out between now and preseason camp in August as the Knights look for a replacement for Ray Rice, but he is certain of one thing. The days of Rutgers having a workhorse back like Rice are over. With Kordell Young sitting out the serious work this spring as he continues to recover from knee surgery, Robinson and Jourdan Brooks have been the spotlight tailbacks -- with Joe Martinek working his way into the mix. Young is considered the heir apparent to Rice, the greatest running back in school history, but hasn't shown he is an every-down back yet. His absence has given Robinson and Brooks the opportunity to showcase themselves this spring as they bid for some of the 380 carries -- 29 per game -- that Rice had a year ago.

Who cares! Rutgers stinks

April 14, 2008  09:28 AM ET

I do not want to say that Rutgers stinks but the Big East is getting better and Rutgers might fall off.

Must admit, Rice was one heck of a RB and it whoever replaces him has some big shoes to fill.
Who am I kidding? The Scarlet Knights do not have any kind of shot at the Big East title without Rice.

Sorry Gang, but Rutgers won't stink this year. While it will be tough to replace Ray, if you could replace him, they will be a more balanced team. They will need to rely more on their receivers, particularly TE. They should also be better in other areas, such as special teams and defense, so this should take some of the pressure off of the offense to perform. While some teams may be better, I still think the Big East is wide open. While Pornstache at PITT recruits well every year, it doesn't seem to translate into wins. I respect WVU, but wonder how graduation and the defection of Rich Rod will impact their program. South Florida and Cinncinatti will be tough, but I don't see either of them dominating. I see this being wide open, with RU having a shot at winning the confernece. Wait until September before you write them off!!!

Not exactly writing them off RUSteve but despite being the best returning passer in the league, Mike Teel doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence. They better hope a RB emerges because if you put it all on Teel then another 6 or 7 win season is ahead. Good but not Big East title good.

J HOVA: "Not exactly writing them off RUSteve but despite being the best returning passer in the league, Mike Teel doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence."

Keep in mind that Teel played the last nine games of the regular season with an injured thumb on his throwing hand. Unfortunately that negated the vertical passing game and made his throwing inconsistent. An example of this was his interception to end the Cincy game. His performance in our bowl game, once his thumb had time to heal, was more indicative of what he brings to the table.

Two areas that will be stronger which will improve our O this year is TE and FB. For 2007 we lost an NFL caliber FB In Brian Leonard and two NFL caliber TE's in Clark Harris and Sam Johnson to graduation. This year we have several players who have grown into those positions and will provide better blocking and additional passing options for Teel. If we have any production at RB (and it could be an interesting mix, with Young and Robinson as speed backs, Brooks as a bruising back, and Martinek as a combination of speed and power) our offense could be downright scary.

doesn't matter. schiano will be leaving for PSU soon anyway. it's his dream job. then rutgers will be really screwed.

April 14, 2008  02:50 PM ET

Joe Martinek is closer to Ray Finkel than he is Ray Rice.

April 14, 2008  03:32 PM ET

I agree DJ Spanky. A healthy Teel and improvement at the TE and FB positions are key. I have read that Cochrane is playing well and may start (I had read rumors that he was thinking of transferring). I also think that while the RB position won't have a workhorse, each of the RB's brings something to the table. Another key is the ability of Brooks to use his size as a short yardage and goal line back. I disagree with Hova that Teel cannot shoulder the load, as he is a senior and this is his team to lead. I think that he is up to it as long as he stays healthy.

April 14, 2008  03:39 PM ET

I really have no idea why Schiano didn't try to jump off ship when he had the chance. Rutgers really isn't anything with Ray Rice. I feel that i should add that Teel is terrible.

April 14, 2008  04:13 PM ET

Rutgers has had 1 good year! NO ONE cares about them. Do they even have fans?

April 14, 2008  04:48 PM ET

It appears that they do BauerStar33, since two of them have taken me to task.

I still feel the way I do, but I will say that RUSteve and DJSpanky do make good defenses of the program.

April 14, 2008  06:22 PM ET

Once and if Kordell Young is 100 percent, this kid will make RU fans somewhat forget about Ray Rice. Young is the real deal. If you're a Knights fan, keep your fingers crossed he returns healthy for August.

April 14, 2008  07:14 PM ET

Wow are some of you going to be surprised this season when you see a completely healthy Mike Teel. This guy is just unbelievable to watch live. I've seen him three times so far this spring and he continues to amaze me with the throws that he is capable of making. Obviously some of you are lamenting over the loss of Rice, but consider that Mason Robinson looked good in their last season, Jourdan Brooks is just a plain beast who's got ridiculous speed with a lot of size, and Kordell who if he rebounds well could be dangerous similar to how he was pre-injury.

April 15, 2008  08:51 AM ET

I lvoe it when people ask with criticism whether or not RU has fans...Their games have been sold out and reaching exponential numbers for some time now...now requiring a multi-billion $ stadium expansion.

They may not have 100+k fans at a game like the Cornhuskers...but out places like that...is there really anything else to do except for watch football?

RU now has a full stable of RBs of various sizes/strengths/style-of-play, a quality place-kicker replacement(San San Te), Teel, who despite being injured last season ranked one of the best in the NCAA.
