Francona's mysterious text message

The text message began with "dad" or "pop," Terry Francona wasn't sure which. He thought it might have been from his 14-year-old daughter, but because the number was unfamiliar, he texted back and asked whose number it was. "It's mine, [expletive]," came the reply, much to the consternation of the manager, who then called the number to see who had the nerve to address him that way. "I was getting ticked," Francona said. "I was all mixed up. Because the last [message] said, 'Put me in, [expletive].'" It was David Ortiz, informing the manager in his own colorful way that he wanted to be restored to the Red Sox lineup. "Actually, I was kind of relieved," Francona said before last night's game. "I didn't care if David gets hits or not, I won't have a 14-year-old talking like that to her dad. The good news was, my daughter's not speaking that way, and David wants to play."

Manny is a flat out stud. With two out and a runner in scoring position he's my guy. With all due respect to A-Rod and others Manny is the man.

I watched the game w/ my son last night and it was a blast. During the battle in the 7th innning when the catcher boucning around setting up late and they got Manny, I told my son Manny would get another shot. Boy did he Manny come up big?

It was cool explain to my kid why the catcher was moving so much. All the time my wife was looking at me like who cares. Baseball is back. The Tiger aren't done but my Dodgers may be.......

This my advice to anyone pitching to Manny during a contract drive year: inside, inside and then further inside. Never, ever, give Manny anything to hit and, never give him anything that he can extend his hands on and get around on. Again: Inside, inside and then further inside until he and the ball are one... Manny meet the ball. Ball meet Manny. Oh, so sorry, Manny did that hurt your ribs? :)

****, STUPID story. What's next? A story about someone from the Sox taking a $h!t after the game?

April 15, 2008  10:29 AM ET

I don't care if he hits? If Francona felt that way about the whole lineup...well...let's just say i think that that is a bit of an exageration. Of coarse you care if your DH hits.

4192jc,
That is just good advice in a contract year or not.
Pound him inside.
