Mets push back Pedro's return
The pitching help that the struggling Mets could use most - three-time Cy Young winner Pedro Martinez - won't be arriving anytime soon. GM Omar Minaya told The Post the Mets now expect a strained left hamstring to sideline Martinez until at least the middle of May - and possibly into June.

Can it get any worse? Santana is struggling a little, Maine is struggling a lot, and Mets hitting is inconsistant. THats right... just keep pouring salt into the wounds of fans that bleed blue and orange.

How is this bad luck? They are team of older players who are more than likely to go down during the season as they have in the past. This should be nothing new for Mets fans. Maybe they can get their heads out of the clouds now and back to the reality that they aren't the runaway division winner.

Not only that, they mortgaged their future for Santana. So, they will have him, but nothing else in their staff. Pedro is done, Maine is a 3, Perez is a mental-case, El Duque is 77 and Pelfry is unproven and looks to be a 5 at best.
Not a great looking staff past Santana. Not to mention their suspect lineup.

Oh well....at least his shoulder is holding up. I atribute his injuries less to age, and more to lack of Jheri curl. Look it up. His injuries have been inversely proportional to his Jheri curl.

I heard they used Hernandez, Gooden and Strawberry's stash as mortar.

Governor, the Mets didn't mortgage their future for Santana. Even if the pieces we sent to Minnesota were to perform wonderfully, the move was necessary and the trade components were not highly touted.
That said - the NY Post is reporting this story irresponsibly. Their timetable in the story states that Pedro could be out til mid-May, into June. His original timetable was 4-6 weeks. That would make his return after the middle of May anyway. And since we expected extra time - everyone did - because of his age, this is a complete non-story.

Most of what they report is a non-story. Sure the deal the Mets gave was a lesser deal, but what's left? Especially with a suspect staff remaining. Also, they have Martinez, who looks to be a star, but that won't solve their pitching issues. I don't know how Mets fans trust Omar's decisions. Some of them are real head-scratchers - specifically for older players.

Governor, trust me, I don't give Omar a free pass. That said - this is a non-story as they are essentially repeating his original timetable - and needed a Mets story since they were off last night.
There have been some blunders (trading Brian Bannister to the Royals, relying on El Duque, signing Castillo to a 4 year deal, to name a few) however he has done a decent job. He got Maine & Perez as throw-ins to deals, and they are important to the rotation. I think he made a necessary move in acquiring Church & Schneider to play every day.
GM's will always have issues. He is probably breaking even right now in the successful GM department. Time can only tell. Nobody trusts him blindly.

No one should read the Post as it ranks just barely above the Star, the Globe and the Enquirer. Pedro was going to be out until about mid May as it was so if he gets an extra week or so then yes it'd move his return back to the end of May or early June. Nice to see the guys at the Post can use a calendar and count forward 2 weeks and then think they've reinvented the wheel and make it back page news.

This is Pedro's fourth trip to the DL in the last three years. It's about time the Mets realized what they've got in him...a former star whose body just can't do it anymore.
He's Randy Johnson's ugly sister.

Santana, Perez and Maine are as good as any staff in the NL.

That is patently absurd. Santana is a proven commodity, although not in the NL (which shouldn't make much difference). Oliver Perez is RIDICULOUSLY unproven. Yes. he's rebounded nicely since his awful seasons in Pittsburgh, but don't forget, 2007 wasn't even his best season. He was a stud in 2004, and then let it slip away and there is no guarentee it won't happen again. And Maine is pretty good, but again, one season doesn't prove much. You have Santana and a bunch of question marks. Period.

Pedro can pitch when healthy.
You will get what you get from him from now on, hopefully he will be there when it counts.

Maybe true, but our chief competition in Philly has a question mark followed by a bunch of guys we know won't succeed. I like our chances

METS4, you should like your chances. This is just an unnecessary reminder for all baseball fans how fragile and inexact pitching is.
