Shockley's Falcons job in danger

D.J. Shockley jogged from drill to drill Monday at the Falcons' first mini-camp of 2008. At every stop he could only watch fellow quarterbacks Chris Redman and Joey Harrington take all the snaps. The injured left knee that cost Shockley his 2007 season hasn't completely healed. The injury was awful timing because constant turnover at quarterback created opportunities. Shockley is in the unenviable position as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart. Both Redman and Harrington signed new contracts in the offseason. By April 28, a day after the NFL draft, Shockley could be No. 4. That isn't good since most NFL teams typically carry three quarterbacks. Atlanta is expected to select a quarterback -- possibly Boston College's Matt Ryan with the No. 3 overall pick -- and the pecking order will change.

Sucks to get hurt and lose a job, but it is a reality all of us face. Granted, the odds of me getting a career-threatening injury working on an Oracle database are pretty slim. I'd wager that pro football offers more opportunities to get injured. I'd also wager that every man playing knows this reality...

oh yeah i kno it suckz

If they make Ryan the number 3 pick, its gonna be yet another very long season for Atlanta fans.

We will gladly except D J in Dallas as our back up or third QB. I agree with you KP, if they take a QB with that pick they have not improved their sitaution. Redman is unproven and Harrington sucked last year! They would be better served at least waiting until D J is ready to play again before making any QB moves.

Damn it Falcons! Don't you do it!

Chris Redman, Joey Harrington, and D.J. Shockley....numbers 1,2 and 3 QB respectively.

I dont know, but if Im D.J. Shockley...Im not too worried about my shot at being the starter by November at the latest

Like being inline for a roller coaster....and technically you know that your man number 23 on a ride that seats 22 a whirl..........but then you notice the kid in front of you is already scared out of his mind, crotch wet with urine, just waiting to run right through to the exits when the ride stops to let him in.......................and the kid in front of him...clearly isn't the 40 inch minimum height to ride...and that pimply faced, minimum wage ride conductor is ready to boot him out of the line as soon as possible................................................................Ye agh..........thats what its like.

Poor DJ. He's just gotta stay patient. I hope the best for this kid. I didn't agree with his decision to leave UGA early, but whatever man. In all actuality the ONLY reason I like him is because he left UGA to hopefully get drafted by the Falcons, and what happens??? He gets drafted by the Falcons, and thus a dream is half way realized. And seeing that he has the oppurtunity to have an absolute dream come true to become the starting QB for one of his favorite teams, I'm rootin' for him. As said above, I don't Redman and Harrington are THAT much competition so,... IT'S TIME TO STEP IT UP SHOCKLEY!!!! Cause if you can't pass up these 2 QBs, your dream is stopping at QB#3.

If Joey H. is slotted ahead of you in the depth chart, that is not a good sign of pleasant times ahead. One word for you Shockley: Arena

April 15, 2008  09:50 AM ET

I'm hoping that Joey is only slotted ahead of him because it is early... Although, I wouldn't slot Joey ahead of Ryan Leaf....

Seems like the media is more in love with Atlanta taking Ryan than Atlanta is.

April 15, 2008  12:27 PM ET

He has far more upside than Harrington. It would be a mistake to cut him over Joey.

April 15, 2008  01:19 PM ET

MK6PPC, D.J. Shockley did not leave Georgia early to join the draft. He sat patiently behind David Greene for three years to get his chance to led the Bulldogs. He is both a gifted athlete and a fine young man.

Let DJ play. Let him play for real.

Let's be real. Fans around here get all emotional because he played at UGA. The only reason he even got drafted was because the Falcons wanted to make a PR move and it was low risk since it was a late round. At the tiem they had Vick locked up starter positon so they coudl bring the kid along slowly and see if he coudl develop into a back-up or perhaps contribute elsewhere. But now they have to find a #1 and have backups who can come in and play at this level (Harrington?????, maybe Redman for a few games). Point is, that luxury of keeping him to see what happens is gone. Havingonly played one year in college, albeit he was impressive, he was consdidered a bit of a project for them to see what might develop. I especially admire his his character to wait 4 years for his chance and then make the most when he finally did get the chance. But, to be honest, while he is a find young man, he couldn't even start in college till his senior year. Now, if he is damaged goods, they can't tie up a slot as his biggest asset was quickness and that has diminished. Also consider the kid who kept him on the bench (David Green) is not even a starter in NFL himself, so success in college with the offense UGA runs does not necessarily mean it will transalte to same in the NFL. Redman and Harrington are stop gap only but are probably better equipped to come off the bench for a few series or a game or two than a banged up still learning Shockley.
