Is Pirates' Bay misunderstood?

Posted: Wednesday April 16, 2008 07:42AM ET

Jason Bay has become the subject of considerable criticism among Pirates fans, many of whom see him as underachieving and overpaid. Worse, he's often portrayed as someone who doesn't care and as a result of that and low productivity should be benched, traded or demoted. Part of the animosity toward Bay relates to his laid-back style. For some reason, fans think players need to show a degree of anger when they fail. If they don't, it's taken to mean they don't care. Bay cares, although his expression rarely changes, whether he strikes out or homers. Such a style would not figure to be a problem in Pittsburgh since it worked rather well for Willie Stargell, Franco Harris and Mario Lemieux.

He's a dope. Stop trying to get your spot on sportscenter and just catch the damn ball. These players today are ridiculous.

opps...wrong story. This was meant for the Soriano story

He ought to tell those fans that they look like morons to him since they will not get their politicians and club owners to find a way to put a reasonable team on the field. Gambling money, kidnappings, tax on neighboring states or Texas. Something.

Tell Bush and Clinton that the whole western part of the state will go for her if they give you some of the billions that are getting ripped off in Iraq. If they will not go for it, I'm sure some Chicago operators could cut a deal with Barack that could get you some kind of payday. Tell him you need to cling to it in your pathetic little loser white midwestern lives.

Why care? He is on the Pirates...
When the front office starts caring about putting a winner on the field then the players should be expected to care.

It's a Canadian JD Drew

He probably wants to play on a team that hasn't had 15 consecutive losing seasons.

Maple Leaf flag having canucks can't play baseball!

I can understand the frustration of the fans, but Jason Bay has been one of the only bright lights in that organization for years now. It's just a real shame that the front office doesn't do more to field a competitive team.

Although, keep your eyes open for the calling up of uberprospect Steven Pearce. That kid's gonna be the next Ryan Braun...

If he played his sport as well as those three played theirs, he could act any way he wanted...but that's not the case....

All offense, no glove? :-)

LOL Well done! Yeah, the glove on Braun is sorely lacking, but the kid can rake. I understand this Steven Pearce kid has more tools, actually, as a speedy OF who can hit the tar out of the ball. We'll see...

Bay's a Canadian, that Canuck blood is so thick they lack the ability to get redassed!

Here's a quote about Braun's, um, fielding last year:

'To quote a site I read a few days ago:

Milwaukee Brewers 3B Ryan Braun is an amazing hitter. But to call him a butcher on defense is an insult to knife-wielding swine slicers. In fact, it is not an exaggeration to call Braun the worst defensive player of any starter in the Major Leagues. Braun's is fielding is so atrocious, it should be enough for Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to win the National League Rookie of the Year. Will it happen? Probably not. Writers often forget there are two parts to the game and concentrate solely on offensive numbers. '

That last sentence is what I've been saying for years...and it comes to all awards...

So, he's a lazy Canadian who plays in Pittsburg? Wow, no wonder the Pittsburg fan is unhappy with him.
