Dolphins still talking to Long

As of Monday night, the Dolphins had not initiated contract talks with Chris Long -- which is consistent with Peter King's si.com report that they are negotiating only with Jake Long and have given him a deadline to accept. Owner Wayne Huizenga won't discuss the No. 1 pick, but has such confidence in Bill Parcells, that he's not conceding next season as strictly a rebuilding one: ''A lot will depend on the draft,'' he said. ``Bill's doing a good job.'' Parcells did not accompany general manager Jeff Ireland and coach Tony Sparano to workouts and visits with the potential No. 1 picks, but Huizenga said that is OK because ``that's the general manager's job.''

And a Long talk it is.

April 16, 2008  06:53 AM ET

I'm sure he will be great in the NFL.

Miami should trade their pick for multiple picks if they can.

April 16, 2008  06:57 AM ET

sure you are bill....wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

Linemen, the safest gamble.

Interesting.

and I see Steve Cooper was suspended the first 4 games..

I dont understand this Headline....

Are the Dolphins still Talking TO Long?

I didn't know they were long winded before bringing in the Big Tuna. Now he is kinga long winded...but I didn't think the Dolphins talked excessively before him.

Sorta of a quiet team if you ask me...........................

Whoops...just reread the quote and checked a literary book. Too long would have meant they talked excessively. "To Long"..means they are speaking with a person who is presumably named, Long.

Still....The Big Tuna does still talk for quite a bit though. But he is entertaining.MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM I like Tuna.

April 16, 2008  11:11 AM ET

C'mon TUNA... Is that all you got? YAWN!

April 16, 2008  11:23 AM ET

They want him to come cheap but I don't think that he will.

April 16, 2008  01:22 PM ET

Tuna's gonna trade him. Too many holes to fill for one draft. It should be interesting though. Parcell's is pretty savy at rebuilding.

As of Monday night? There is no Monday night football. The Dolphins had not initiated contract talks with Chris Long? What...... they're that good? Peter King's novel, "Death of A Salesman", rises again. They are negotiating only with Jake Long and have given him a deadline to accept. Who's Jake? How many Longs are there?

What room am I in? Golly, I need my "nothing box".

April 16, 2008  04:16 PM ET

I need long underwear this up and coming season.......

April 16, 2008  05:41 PM ET

I don't see this one going through. A deadline is never good for a player who can be manipulated by an agent.

April 16, 2008  06:15 PM ET

I think that all this talk is a diversion. Jake Long is the best player in this draft, and the Dolphins surely do need him. A lot more teams are in need of an OT like Jake, than a DE. Plus the next best OT is Ryan Clady, is kind of raw and needs to build some more upper body strength. He's also lower on the boards than Dorsey, Ellis, Gholston, and Chris Long. Most anyhow. Every team in the top 5 needs an OT like Jake Long, while only I think a couple teams will be willing to trade up to get him. St. Louis might, and probably Kansas City. Kansas City could take Clady at 5; but you never know. Antlanta, with their new front office, will probably move down before moving up. Oakland just likes to take the sexy picks instead of filling needs.

As a Dolphin Fan, I want them to take either Long. I think both wil make their teammates on their side of the ball look better and create more oppurtunities for them to create plays. I just wish we could have both of them. Get the QB in a later round. If they are terrible again next year, they should be in position to draft Tebow or Stafford if they decide to come out. Tebow is much better than any QB in this draft class. I can't believe Mel Kiper is saying that he grades Matt Ryan up there with Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, and Philip Rivers.

This is one LOOOOONNNNGGGG story !!!

April 16, 2008  08:24 PM ET

As Long as they're talking and not signing.

Visit http://rmensch.blogspot.com for my updated mock draft.

I finished #5 in the world in ESPN's NFL Draft Forecast game last year and you'll find me high on the leaderboard again this year.

Sorry rmensch, but you go into the contest this year with that mock draft, and you'll be lucky to be in the top 5,000 let alone top 5. There's a good chance Clady goes before Otah (because Otah did terrible at the combine and brought up other ?'s in the process about his potential), and New England is probably going to go linebacker at #7. It's crap shot trying to guess what these teams need or want, it's extremely cocky to say you are going to be high up on the list again this year.
