Vols safety practices with offense
A promise was made to Eric Berry a couple of years ago. He was playing defense at Creekside High in Fairburn, Ga., and was deemed the best cornerback prospect in the nation by recruiting services. But he also loved playing quarterback. The Tennessee coaching staff knew this. A proposal was made: Come to Knoxville, battle for a starting job in the secondary, and we will find a way to get you looks on offense. On Tuesday, UT Coach Phillip Fulmer was a man of his word. Berry, a freshman All-America safety last season, lined up at quarterback for two plays and ran misdirections. He later ran two more plays from quarterback during a mini-scrimmage that was closed to the media.

This kid is awesome. I really hope they use him on offense because that offense will need a spark this season.

Teams need that mobile QB to change the pace of the game... Berry is amazing but i have no idea about his throwing skills... yea he may be fast but if a team sees him line up at QB (with no throwing skills) then the D will all blitz and leave Berry no where to run

a good way would be to put him in the slot, and then run a wr reverse with an option to throw. maybe not exactly but along those lines. this is an incredible talent and you could catch your opponent off guard if you sneak him in for a play or two, use him as a gamebreaker for a play or two on offense per game. thats what i would do if i was phillip fulmer

The question isn't whether Berry can do it. The question is whether the coaching staff doesn't waste the opportunity. Take the Way Back Machine to 2003 with Ainge and Schaeffer. There was no doubt that when Schaeffer came into a game for a few plays, the stagnant offense was going to start moving down the field. Ainge proved to be a good QB, but at that time, the OL was Swiss cheese, and we needed the mobility of Schaeffer. Unfortunately, they only used him for a few series a game, and he got hurt. By the time spring practice rolled around, the coaching staff, not knowing what to do with an athletic QB, gave the job to Ainge, even over Rick Clausen, who had really won the Spring/Summer QB battle. Maybe with a new outside mind running the offense, we will be able to use Berry to mix things up. I hope so, because the past few years have been disappointing to watch. To much potential wasted down the drain. 2006 Florida and LSU games come to mind...

The real benefit of a mobile quarterback is it allows a team to run the spread offense easier. The spread offense is the most difficult thing to gameplan for.
Also in 2003 I believe the offensive line was pretty decent that year - I think that Munoz was still on the team and he was always pretty for the team.

A lot of conversation about 4 or 5 plays... Sounds like a page from Houston Nutt's playbook though. Probably a good thing to have this type of option when you have a young quarterback though.
