Bruins tradition irks Neuheisel

A little more than three months on the job and UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel was already dealing with a quasi-mutiny. Bruins players had just finished stretching when they gathered in a big huddle, worked themselves into a frenzy, then bolted through the gate at Spaulding Field to take the traditional "over the wall" day that ended practice and left coaches a bit stunned. Neuheisel went to the locker room and met with seniors to"make sure they were all doing it together." He had asked the team not to have an "over the wall" day before spring practice, according to one player who asked not to be identified, promising to "make it up to us later." The "over the wall" day has been going on at UCLA for more than 30 years, including Bruins teams that Neuheisel played on, though players on those teams actually went over a wall instead of stampeding through an open gate. A year ago, then-head coach Karl Dorrell organized the day himself so it would not disrupt practice.

Very Interesting!

You go and do exactly what your coach say not to....I smell a 5 am puke session...

This is nothing new for Rick. He's use to players misbehavin. Let's just hope they don't go and do what some of the UW players did like RAPE and MURDER.

I have a feeling coach will more than make up for it.

It's one of those goofy player traditions like Senior Cut Day

They know they'll have to make up for it. And don't be fooled, Rick knew it was gonna happen, he's a player's coach

BruinsWin!

Then why all this folderol? Tradition is a BIG motivator in college FB. You don't screw with it UNTIL you've established your own winning tradition.

Cracks already beginning to appear. Things are not looking so good in Westwood (aka Whoville).

Okay, lemme get this stragiht, going through a gate disrupts practice? And going through a gate is a highly anticipated ritual? So much in fact, that previously mentioned coach promises to "make it up to them" later? They just do things different out there in California I guess

April 16, 2008  02:13 PM ET

BruinsWin - How does the bruin nation feel about this? He is trying to install a new offense with limited spring practice days/hours right? Did they just lose an entire day of practice?

April 16, 2008  02:46 PM ET

To THE TRUTH: The Tradition is called "Over the Wall Day" and the seniors used to go through stretchig and warm-ups, and then all run and jump "over the wall" to ditch the rest of practice. They ammended it to running through the gate so nobody gets hurt (a smart move), but kept the name.

It's basically the seniors ditching practice after stretching

MARIN.....a good deal of folks are up in arms about it for sure...considering we only get 15 Spring Practice days allowed by the NCAA and this likely used up one of them (Neuhesial said he would appeal to see if he could have the day not count but that probably won't fly). Also, they're pretty upset because some HS coaches and potential recruits were also present and skipping practice like that when no one was expecting it could have given the wrong impression.

Those are valid points.

I'm of the opinion that one practice isn't going to make or break the season and it IS important for the players to have some solidarity and sense of tradition. It helps them remember why they suit up everyday.

Us realistic Bruin fans will be happy with an above .500 season this year and know it's gonna take a year or two to really get things rolling with all our new staff.

Our O-line sure could have used the practice, but....oh well I guess. :\

One thing is DOESN'T show is any kind of lack of commitment, or any nonsense like that.

As a Bruins fan, I understand the tradition...I just think that it was not in the best interest of the team. There is way too much competition right now and we are rebuilding a program to compete with the established powerhouses. Although it will not take one year to turnaround, skipping practice like this takes away from the rebuilding process.

This is about the most stupid "tradition" I have ever heard of.

Why? There has to be team cohesiveness and all of it can't be superimposed by the coaching staff. Man, you ought to read a book on anthropology: it's tribal.

Maybe all the seniors can kick Norm Chow in the nuts after they stretch...

F' the Wall!

Stop being so bitter #1, he's gone and there is nothing you can do about it!

That would be pretty funny.

It's weak they didn't follow tradition and climb over the wall. The seniors on the team must be pretty stupid if they allow their team to bolt from practice when prized recruits are there to watch...talk about self destruction of a program
