Did Carmelo get special treatment?

The Nuggets organization awaits the results of Carmelo Anthony's blood test after his arrest at about 4 a.m. Monday. The team likely won't punish Anthony until after the results are determined and the situation is thoroughly investigated. Anthony's lawyer said the results could take two weeks. Denver police, meanwhile, denied giving Anthony preferential treatment after his arrest. Anthony was charged with drunken driving, driving without a license, failure to drive in a single lane and failure to dim lights, a Denver police spokesman said. Anthony was then issued a summons to appear in court May 14. Officers tried to get a responsible person to pick up Anthony, but when it was not possible to have Anthony's fiancee, La La Vasquez, pick him up, an officer decided to drive him to the Ritz-Carlton hotel, where she was staying, Jackson said. Vasquez, however, refuted the statement, saying in a released statement Tuesday night: "I will always have his back and never refused to pick him up from the police station. In fact, they offered to bring him to me." Generally, offenders are taken to a detoxification facility.

"I will always have his back and never refused to pick him up from the police station. In fact, they offered to bring him to me."

Ms Vasquez makes it sound like she does this quite often.

Come on Carmelo - get on your game and knock the Lakers out first round.

I'm with you man, but cancerous George Karl is still at the helm so it'll be a longshot.

Did you read the SI article on Karl's coaching approach.........there isnt any. He admits that more than 50% of the offensive plays are playground and not planned. They apparently dont even worry about D...just outscore the opposition. How far will this go in the playoffs??

They will NOT beat the LAKERS; and for the record this treatment DOES NOT seem too special ti me.

Sorry Jack but the way the Nuggets play (don't play) defense, there is no way they knock out anybody. Defense wins championships!!!
Bye Bye, Carmelo with your 'hit and head for the lockerroom' game. Another season wasted.

April 16, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Can you drown your sorrows over being bounced from the playoffs before the playoffs begin?

April 16, 2008  09:46 AM ET

What do you mean, did he receive preferential treatment? If you or I get stopped for drunk driving, I promise, the police are not taking you to the Ritz-Carlton. The Crowbar hotel would be my guess.

April 16, 2008  10:09 AM ET

I wouldnt call this preferential, just kindness by the officer. I've been drunken walking down the middle of a road (still illegal, not as much as a DUI admittedly) and an officer swung by and took me back to the bar where i could get a cab...but first i got more shots.

It was actually right after that **** from UF got tasered and the cop hadn't seen it yet, we had some good laughs.

April 16, 2008  10:19 AM ET

h.e.l.l yeah this is special treatment...he's drunk..and he has NO license...and he's driving dangerously....WOW!...you mean that the police officer drove him home because his wife would not come and get him?...some wife..

April 16, 2008  10:29 AM ET

i must agree the nuggets chances of beating the lakers are not that great , but its not like the lakers play that much defense either so there is still a little hope for the nuggets (even if its very little)

April 16, 2008  10:29 AM ET

I wouldn't say special treatment. If they didn't arrest and book him, then that would be special. But dropping him off isn't that bad..

April 16, 2008  11:30 AM ET

Sometime you guys amaze me. If Melo was drunk, with no drivers license, and driving erratically, and did not go directly to jail, he MOST CERTAINLY received preferential treatment. If you don't believe me, try it sometime.

April 16, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Hi! So, there you are envious people! Your sorry lives are making angry on what you believe is a preferential treatment on the rich and famous.

Guess what? It isn't.
Carmelo is being given such courtesy because he is recognizable. He's an athlete first and foremost. He was just given his due respect and appreciation by the local cops. He was charged for DUI which he deserves and you can't say there's double standard with that.

More often than not, officers only reacts on how people act when apprehended. If one gets rude and ballistic, then handcuffs and beating are you'll gonna get. Melo might have reacted politely even though drunk.

If you really believe everybody's equal in America. Then you really have to discuss it with director and activist Michael Moore.

April 16, 2008  11:46 AM ET

SOP is your ass has to chill out in the drunk tank. And then there gonna go ahead and drive you home? Oh my God. They're the police not a taxi service. Of course compared to your average citizen this is preferntial treatment. Maybe to NBA players this isn't so I guess it depends on what class you are in. Its nice to see though that in Amercia money can buy you a whole new quality of life.

April 16, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Everyone that drives drunk is an idot! He's an idiot!

April 16, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Besides that fact that he sounds like some cheap-assed candybar, he's a lazy punk. Here's hoping the Nuggets next charter flight becomes a lawn dart!

April 16, 2008  12:19 PM ET

That's quite a statement, Lucem. You shouldn't drive drunk, but everyone has at some point. Carmelo's timing is bad. But, the Nugs will be lucky to win one game against the Lakers.
