Barkley rips Bulls decisions

TNT analyst Charles Barkley had a tidy summation for the state of the Bulls: "Y'all in trouble." "They have a bunch of good, little pieces, but they should have made trades," Barkley said. "Who is their best player? We start with that. Who is their best player? To be a great team in the NBA, you have to have at least one really good player. When you think about the Bulls, you don't even know who their best player is." Barkley also mocked the Bulls for their apparent unwillingness to have included Luol Deng in a trade for Kevin Garnett or Pau Gasol, although Deng, Tyrus Thomas and a first-round pick were offered to Minnesota in 2006 for Garnett.

This guy is an idiot.

April 16, 2008  07:05 AM ET

Charles usually tells it like it is and is not to worried about being politicaly correct. Who is their best player? he does have a point. look at their record. it says it all.

April 16, 2008  07:26 AM ET

Broadhead.. Barkley has forgotten more about the NBA than you've ever known in your life.. everything he said is exactly right.. now they've got role players turning down contract extensions for big $$$.. they're a mess

April 16, 2008  07:51 AM ET

This guy can play but lacks the mental side of it, so to compensate, he just talks anyway he wants

April 16, 2008  07:52 AM ET

Good question Chuck. I don't know who their best player is. Only team that didn't have one standout player that's won the championship recently was the Pistons. You could argue who their best player was. But they had a great starting 5 and played defense. The Bulls don't have either right now

April 16, 2008  08:39 AM ET

Barkley is usually right on. The way he says things is usually the problem that some people dont agree with him, as you can see above. The Bulls went from a Eastern Confrence contender, to pretty much nothing. They are young and look like they had a very passive offseason after a taste of success the year before. They don't have a star, and now they are planning on moving Tyrus because they cant get him to play to his potential. They got an absolute gift being able to move Ben Wallace after they obsurd contract they gave hime. Clean some house and get some picks. Its long past time to shake things up and start building a real contender

April 16, 2008  08:50 AM ET

Barkley speaks the truth, They have no star player on the roster.

April 16, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Chuck is on point in this instance, they don't have a star on their roster. Many dislike Barkley for his brash personality. But in most cases he says what others only think and are afraid to say. I applaud his honesty and hopes he never stops sepaking his mind! He keeps it real and as fans should appreciate that as opposed to those (broadcasters) who want to be "politically correct"!

April 16, 2008  09:17 AM ET

That's "speaking", sorry!

April 16, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Broadhead, this guy is not an idiot. He knows his stuff and isn't afraid to speak the truth. The Bulls are a train wreck. They had so much promise and they blew it. Barkley is the only reason I watch TNT.

April 16, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Don't shoot the messenger. Barkley tells the truth. Garnett would have made a big difference in that team.

April 16, 2008  10:15 AM ET

sounds like a good evaluation to me...chucks usually an idiot..but he somehow always seems to be telling the truth...

April 16, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Barkley is the Simon Cowell of NBA announcers/commentators

April 16, 2008  10:31 AM ET

The Bulls need him as a G.M. I mean at least Barkley has the balls to say & make something happen.Yes he doesn't have the best personsality, But in this business who cares!!! I just want to see Chicago back on top, because being a long time Bulls fan, this is embarassing and flat out tiring!! I mean have you guys read about what Paxson said today about making the playoffs next year with this group of guys he has now. Now that's an idiot!!!!!!!!

April 16, 2008  10:32 AM ET

i dont think that garnett would of make THAT much of a difference , if they have gotten garnett and another good piece ok , but otherwise it would have almost been like garnett in the timberwols all over again

April 16, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Charles was right on

April 16, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Barkley's fun to listen to....but he doesn't let the facts get in the way of a good rant. This article states that he mocked Chicago for not agreeing to include Deng in the trade for Garnett, when they did include him in their offer... and was pointed out, the Pistons don't have a "best player", and they are arguably the best team over the past five years.

I love to hear Charles rant, but I just don't take it too seriously....

April 16, 2008  11:06 AM ET

When asked about the current state of the LOS ANGELES LAKERS, Barkley said,"IT'S LOVELY IN LAKERLAND!!!"

April 16, 2008  11:27 AM ET

At first I thought that was a very astute comment by Barkley - then I asked myself the same question - "Who's the best player?" - about a number of other teams such as the Spurs, Pistons, Celtics, Suns ... and the question wasn't always obvious or easy to answer. In many cases the "best" players have roles that they're best at - especially in the case of Detroit. It also works for the Spurs with Duncan being post/leadership, Manu being shooting, Parker being point/speed, Bowen being defense.

While you could ask that question when Barkley was playing - it seems that the league has changed somewhat since then. I understand sound-bites work in media but when you really look at it his question seems outdated and "cute" rather than being that insightful.

Perhaps Chicago was trying to follow the format used by Detroit/Spurs and having the sum of the parts equal up to something better than a single star player?

The Bulls are a mess. Can you believe they would not part with Deng for Kobe? Nice move! And the Pistons are arguably the best team over the last five years??? With only one ring, and they only got that one because Karl Malone was injured and the Lakers were imploding. After this year the Pistons will have gone to 6 straight Eastern Conference Finals and have only one tainted ring. Biggest underachievers of all time.
