Will Bird trade O'Neal, Tinsley?

Larry Bird must get rid of Jamaal Tinsley. Trade, buyout, set him adrift on an Arctic ice floe. Whatever. He must trade Jermaine O'Neal. If those two players are still here when we meet again in October, the Pacers will have made no progress toward rebuilding this team, and the leash on Bird will become dramatically shorter. How about sending O'Neal to the Knicks for Stephon Marbury. Yes, Marbury is a waste, but he has only one year left on his deal. If the Pacers are willing to bite the bullet for one season, more than $20 million will come off the books in 2009-10.

It won't work until he lowers his demands for his players.

A GM that takes on O'Neal's contract with those knees, should have his head examined. And to take Marbury and his contract should be grounds for dismissal.

I like Oneal alot as a player- when healthy- he's basically a 20-10 player.....but he is always hurt & is NOT a franchise caliber player-
So the answer is NO

and ps- why do we always seem to get re-tread pacers & bulls sent to NY?

They need to go into rebuilding mode asap. If you can't contend in the East then you just need to drop the dead weight and give up.

April 17, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Dont let the PAcers become the Knicks franchise. Highest Payroll, suckiest team.

April 17, 2008  10:34 AM ET

if i wee the knicks i would put marbury in there and thne try and put curry and if they won't take then dont do it and for the pacers thats fine both players seem like they're past their prime and they don't want distractions which both of them have been

Having been to Indy to watch the Pacers, its really depressing seeing Reggie Miller's jersey after watching the game. If they ever want to return to their glory days, you have to move O'Neil for whatever you can get ASAP.

April 17, 2008  10:44 AM ET

i don't think tht iz a good trade he ain't doin to good this year

April 17, 2008  10:45 AM ET

walsh wants to get under the cap for 2010 so i highly doubt hes going to take more contracts when he wants to dump curry and randolph

April 17, 2008  11:01 AM ET

they need to do something and I'm glad the Lakers got Gasol and not O'Neal!!!!

April 17, 2008  11:33 AM ET

The Knicks absolutely can NOT trade Stephon Marbury. In my eyes he is untouchable. And no - not because of the stellar play of his alter-ego Starbury. His contract, expiring after the season, is far too valuable to send off for a never-been in O'Neal. Walsh knows we need to be active in free agency in 3 years. This would be a classic step backward.

April 17, 2008  11:56 AM ET

As much as I hate typing the name, I have to agree with Moondizzle. I'd have liked to see a younger, healthier O'Neal on the Knicks, but Walsh needs to focus on how the team will look down the road. Knick fans just have to be patient and consider slow progress a more desirable option than trading one fallen star for another.

they should bring reggie miller out of retirement....lol

April 17, 2008  12:14 PM ET

yea that makes sense to gvet maurbary and just gut the team and take back expiring contracts and play for a lottery pick next year plus have alot of cap room . as far as o'neal knees i thnk he would fit well with a team that he dose not have to be the go to man i would like to see him with the celitcs, suns, pistons,or maybe the nuggets im a wizards fan but i dont think we would necassarily mesh well but it could work

April 17, 2008  12:55 PM ET

How about this the cavs could send Sczerbiak, Varejao, and the expiring contract of Dwayne Jones over to the pacers for
O'Neal

April 17, 2008  12:55 PM ET

once the off-sesason starts that is

April 17, 2008  02:49 PM ET

Bird's INSIGNIFICANT IN INDIANA while Magic's LOVELY IN LAKERLAND!!!

April 17, 2008  03:11 PM ET

O'Neal for Marbury would work but it would be idiotic for the Knicks. With one year on his deal left, the Knicks should just buy Marbury out. Better that then trading him away and picking up another long term deal.

Why does everyone say that the Pacers are going to get worse, before getting better. They just played almost an entire season without Oneal and Tinsley and finished just below .500 and started playing a lot better at the end of the year. No matter what they get for Tinsley and Oneal, it has to be better than nothing. Draft a PG, trade for a low post scorer, and hopefully get someone that can defend on the perimeter. Keep Granger, Dunleavy, Foster, Murphy, Diener, and maybe even resign Murray....they should be able to trade Williams, Diogu, or Daniels and get a quality guy back that "fills a need"...we have a ton of wings and no Low post threats....Two things the Pacers need the most are interior defense..ie...shot blocking...and perimeter defense,...athletic wing commited to playing D....hey i know...get Artest...that will fix everything
