Fired Canucks GM defends job

Despite the Vancouver Canucks' late-season flop, ousted general manager Dave Nonis is convinced the National Hockey League team is on the verge of becoming a winner. Nonis made the claim numerous times Wednesday in his farewell press conference at GM Place. The 41-year-old Burnaby, B.C., native was fired Monday after four seasons at the helm. "I believe this is very close to turning into a championship hockey team," Nonis said. According to Nonis, he was never given an ultimatum to make the playoffs or lose his job, and he insisted he still would not have dealt young assets for a short-term fix.

From what I've been hearing, this guy got jerked around by ownership pretty good. He had to bring in offence, and he tried but was not willing to sell the farm. I guess that will be his downfall with this club, but whoever takes over after that will most likely be thanking him in the long-run.
I love the "I don't think Burkey would like working under me" comment too, good for him to show a little levity while removing the knife from his back.

Report Offensive CommentDead on Bentley!
He got totally screwed. We all know what giving up the farm in the long run gets you. See Leafs-Islanders-Florida- etc.
He had ownership support for how he handled the trade deadline. Luongo cost them a playoff spot- Yeah, like who would have figured that!
This team is still in decent shape and has not destroyed it's future. It may need some tinkering, but thats a much more enviable position to be in than some Blue and White Teams have!

Report Offensive CommentIndeed Baun, I heard that once Dallas had offered TB Mike Smith for Richards, TB asked for Edler, Kesler and Schneider from Vancouver - basically their future. They had a deal in place, but Dallas went and screwed it up for them. And yes, then ownership signed off on it (presumably because they were in the playoffs at that point). Now, they don't make the playoffs, and it's not all good anymore.
Nonis will make his mark in the NHL, he knows what he's doing. Bring him into T.O with Burkey, that would be a dream situation for Leaf fans.

Report Offensive CommentTeams in decent shape but i cant believe the Sedin sisters are going to lead any team anytime soon. Bring in a gritty leader.

Report Offensive Commentman this guy got screwed...by injuries and owership that wants to win now...and would like them to sell away the future

Report Offensive CommentCant get everything done with no real D-line and just the Sedin twins manning the top, overused line. Maybe Naslund should have learned to play center!

Report Offensive CommentHire John Ferguson Junior, I say! Why damage another perfectly good GM? Hire JFJ and you won't have to worry! That way Vancouver will be guaranteed to continue to wallow in mediocrity for years to come! That's what the owners want, isn't it?

Report Offensive CommentHe really should have got another year, at least. I was really impressed with his interview, and with the integrity he clearly brings to the position. How many GMs in the league would refuse to cripple their team's future to save their own ace? Not many, I can tell you that much, and I'd go so far as to say none that have their job on the line. I'd say its a safe bet that this guy will get another shot in the very near future. I don't know if he's what Toronto is looking for - they need a guy who pulls the trigger on trades now, more than anything - but there are some teams out there that'll be shopping for a GM soon enough. Even if he's out of the game next season for some reason, he'll be running someone's team in 2010.
